Go west young man. - John B. L. Soule.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

Horace Greeley was of course the one I was after, but for others who look at Frank's post and say "Huh ? "

I definitely like Tims version better though .  ;D

According to a book I have Horace Greeley reprinted Soule's newspaper article to prove that Soule said "Go west young, man, go west.". Frustrated, Greeley spent the rest of his life denying that he said it, but he always gets credit for it.

It's getting better near me as well.

Still not 2006, but I think those days are long-gone. There's just too many new shooters and too many new guns right now for supply to keep up with demand.

The good news is, I think the ammo companies have an answer to the question of whether this level of demand is the new norm, and that answer is a resounding "YES!", so maybe they'll start making the investments to bring more product to market.
I can't understand people who think banning guns makes them safer. They must also believe that banning books makes them smarter.

Just wondering what the cost of raw materials is doing to the actual cost of ammo....especially .22 so that when I can actually buy .22 I would have some idea if the price is in line with cost to produce(+mark-up naturally).

Companies are gouging. I bought new Remington gold at my local gun store two weeks ago for $23.00, "550 rounds". Cabela's sold some federals' "550 rounds" for just under $21.00 last week. They didn't last long. Hopefully people will stop paying the high prices and they will return close to normal.

Been doing a bit of recon on reloading supplies.  Turns out that none of the online retailers will ship bullets, cases, powder, primers, etc. to MA.  It ain't illegal, they just won't do it...

I hold no ill will against any of them.  If I looked at the ridiculous laws here, like CA and several other restrictive states, I'd do the same.

There's just too many new shooters and too many new guns right now for supply to keep up with demand.

This is hurting the reloading market as well. A lot of new shooters who have been sitting on the fence about reloading, have jumped into it. This is causing a severe powder shortage nationwide. 8 pound containers are not available anywhere in the popular makes like CFE-223, Varget, and H-335. You're lucky if you can find 1 pound containers. If you can, they are priced very high, with a limit too boot.

This is not going away anytime soon, because the demand is above the ability of the manufacturers to produce. Far too many new shooters, guns, and reloaders to keep fed with ammo and components. Bruno's by me usually has a large stock of reloading components. They told me not to expect any 8 pound containers of powder until next July at the earliest. This is going to drag out for another year at least. Prices will no doubt remain high.
