If you have a serious problem evey one should know that you do not talk to ANYONE for at least 24-72 hours to get your head right. When brought in just say" I want an attorney" Tell the attorney" I'm not ready to discuss this tragic event with any one "This gives you more time to answer the questions that will be asked of you while you have your attorney present and also gives you Moe time to go over every little detail of what happened,if you answer the questions right away while you are still shaken after the events you may miss something or say something that you did not intended and things may become distorted.
Good advice. My LEO friends say their job is to get a confession as quickly as possible because the prevailing theory is that the more immediate a confession the more truthful and accurate it is. Then they say.... with a whisper...."
SHUT UP! Don't talk". The psychology behind that statement is that there are many physiological things going on that impair you and that cause you to show...among other things...exuberance and a feeling of euphoria. It's not good to look happy after you've had to shoot someone. The endorphins have kicked in and there is a lot of chemistry going on in a shooter's body that is not condusive to creating a statement.
Case in point, an older gentleman with a CCW killed a man in self-defense on Riverside Drive here in Tulsa. News reporters got there and he appeared downright "happy" he did the deed...that was the endorphins talking, police know it, but very few others know that and that chemically induced attitude did not endear him to much of the populace when shown on local TV.
Once again...great advice...keep quiet. Name, rank and I'm a victim can I file a complaint? Complaint is kind of a code word that starts people thinking you are the innocent one.
I would not have known about the endorphin thing that screws the innocent had it not been for T-R-A-I-N-I-N-G. Like Mr. Bane says from time to time, and it's sage advice, get training!
