Keith, let me take a crack at this. First, thank you for your service. Tough stuff being a Marine and God bless you.
If you and I were walking down a crowded shopping mall in this country, how many people would you see who had worn a helmet, boots and body armor? Damned few I'll bet. Most don't even know anyone in the military. Would you agree so far?
We have a civilian population more concerned with big houses, trophy spouses, liposuction and interest rates than the valiant actions of the men and women who provide the level of safety and security they unconsciously take for granted.
My son and I went to see "Saving Private Ryan" when it first came out. During the first few minutes, while the landing was going on and heavy combat was depicted, I noticed several people watching had faces of horror, like they had never imagined what they were so graphically experiencing. When the film ended and we were walking out into daylight, there were a lot of very somber faces on the now exhausted audience. They NEVER knew.. until that movie.
With some people, it takes a war, a life or death struggle, to teach the value of peace, honor and all the responsibilities that go with it. Sometimes, it might just take a movie. Let them see what you did. Perhaps it will inspire them to lead good lives.
