Anyone Here Shooting A Rock Island Armory 1911 ??
« on: December 27, 2014, 06:38:47 AM »
I finally broke down and ordered a Government Model in 9 MM. After being so impressed with both of my M-5 pump shotguns I got from them, I decided to celebrate my retirement, (which started last Saturday), with a new pistol. I couldn't pass up the price, (on sale from Davidson's through my local dealer for just $307.00). That's the cheapest I've ever seen them for. With taxes, shipping, etc., it came to $357.00 out the door. Still not bad at all.

I've heard a lot of good things about these 1911's from Rock Island, so it's time I found out for myself. I got it in 9 MM because It will be more affordable to shoot. And I already have a Springfield Stainless Loaded 9 MM Target Model, so I'll have plenty of extra magazines.

I've heard some of them require a long break in for everything to wear in before they're 100% dependable. The heavy Parkerizing can grit things up a bit until everything wears in. Others report zero issues from the box. When I get it I'll break it down and lube everything up real good before I wring it out. I also want to change out the grips from the smooth wood, to a nice set of double diamond checkered Cocobolo grips from Hogue. From what I'm seeing, this gun is a straight government model except for what looks like a lowered and flared ejection port, and a flat mainspring housing. Both of which I like. I just wondered if any of you guys are shooting them, and what you thought of them?

It's the best shooting 1911 I ever owned.
I don't know about the 9mm though.

I have one.  It's a great shooter.  Got it used, so don't know about any break-in problems.
Eats anything fed to it, puts them where it's pointed.  Don't know what else you could ask for.

Mine is my EDC in .45, No break-in probs but I found out it refuses to eat Federal Hyrdo-Shock! Eats ANYTHING else but that!

Took about 300 rounds to work 100%, 100% of the time.  I've 1200 more rounds through the tube since.  Steel cased, aluminum cased, brass, FMJ, SJHP, hardcast, have all fed flawlessly.  I haven't tried wadcutters though.

A mid sized tac I from Centerfire Systems high up on the to buy soon list.

I have a Tactical FS 10mm, Tac II FS 9mm, and Tactical CS 9mm, all of which have been flawless with factory FMJ, JHP, and reloads. They shoot almost as well as my Kimbers at about 1/3 the price. This time last year I didn't own one, and was satisfied I now have 3 that go to the range with me 75% of the time I go.

That sounds good! I'm looking forward to getting mine. Hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday.

Well, I just picked up my Rock Island 9 MM from my dealer a couple of hours ago. Overall I'm very impressed. The only "flaw" was the recoil spring plunger. The part on the front was only half checkered. It was totally functional, but looked crappy. It just so happened I had a brand new Ed Brown Stainless recoil spring plunger in my parts box, and installed it. Now it looks great. The contrasting Stainless / blue looks good from the front. The Ed Brown is also a closer fit. The checkering on the front of the plunger was well defined, sharp, and deep.

I immediately field stripped the weapon, and cleaned it. It was dripping with oil and grease. After I gave it a good wet cleaning, I greased the rails and lubricated everything. Now it's ready for the range.

The fit and finish on this gun is excellent for the money. The only plans I have, is to change out the grips for a nice set of Hogue Cocobolo double diamond grips just as soon as I can find a pair. I noticed the stock smooth wood grips are quite thick. I hope this doesn't create an issue when I change them out. The trigger has a nice pull to it with very little creep or "grittiness". Something I didn't expect on a $350.00, 1911. The safety engaged very smoothly, with little effort.

I won't get to the range until next week some time because of the holidays. But I'll be bringing plenty of 9 MM ammunition when I go. I have a feeling I'm really going to like this pistol!
