I turn to you!
« on: August 10, 2008, 02:13:06 AM »
Okay so here it is.  I have or will have the following in my tactical setup: 9mm beretta px4,  para super hawg,  robinson xcr,  remington 1187.  My question to you is what would round this package out (for about $300-$600).  Here is what I am thinking.  A cheap AR or AK for practice,  a nice medium to small frame .357 for nightstand,  "another" remington 870 for accessories,  and last but not least a Ruger Mark III for cheap thrills.

This is the short list,  if you can believe that.  I dont know,  maybe a LCP,  maybe a Glock!  So many choices,  so little time!

The .357 is a good idea.  I'm debating about the LCP myself.  You may have a hardtime finding an AR for that price range, but it seams like the 7.62 ammo is cheaper than the 5.56 so getting an AK does have some merit.

I guess if you are thinking a pocket pistol I would go with the .357 because you can run .38's through it and you can use it as a bedside gun also.

I like all of those ideas, but especially the idea of having a .22 in there. They make a trip to the range a little less expensive and a little more fun. If you live in a place that allows concealed carry, a more concealable duty gun is a good call.

+1 on the .22.

I picked up a good condition Ruger 10/22 at a local pawn shop, came with 2 Ruger magazines.

I took my son shooting the other day - he was here on his way to LA to see his aunt - and even though I had the Sig and an AR, he spent the whole time with the 10/22, had a ball with it, even hand loading the Ram-line 30-round magazine.

I think every gun owner should own a .22 rifle and pistol. I like Rugers. The 10/22 has so many accessories for it you can make it into a sub-caliber tactical rifle or a target rifle or anything else you want. The Butler Creek folding stock and a soft-sided case makes it small enough to pack nearly anywhere. I actually have a pistol permit for mine because our stupid MI law says a rifle or shotgun under 30" is a pistol.  ???

I keep my Glock 27 .40 (my CCW gun) next to the bed at night.
I also keep a Kel-Tec sub-2000 in .40 S&W (uses Glock 22 mags that will also work in the Glock 27) folded up next to the bed.
The Kel-Tec is light, compact, and very (surprisingly) accurate.
I also have my Colt Commander .45 and a Winchester 1300 Defender (with 8-shot tube, loaded with 3 birdshot, 3 buckshot, and 2 slugs) where I can get to them pretty quickly.

To some it may sound like overkill for where I live (rural area), but just this past week there was a home invasion in my area.
Three armed men went into a home where six people were playing cards and hit them for over $4000.

Instead of purchasing a "cheap" AR or AK, you should consider getting a 7.62 conversion kit for your XCR.  From what I've seen, they are within your price range and using the same gun can do nothing but help if  TSHTF.  Sounds like you have a nightstand gun or two in there already, although you can always use just one more.   ;D  The .22 would also be a sound investment as ammo prices continue to climb.  You can usually pick up a good one at pawn shops for relatively cheap, however.  Hope I helped a little bit or atleast gave you something to think about.  If you really can't decide... buy 'em all.  Heck, how important are little things like food when there are guns at stake?   ::)
