Wow...that dress code article is absurd. That is definitely the litmus test as to what is important in society; materialism vs. character.
Another way to look at it is form over function. And I have lived in that world, computer consulting firm. My son was surprised when I said I had to put my uniform on (business suit) - he naturally thought uniform like fireman or policeman, but it was a uniform - white shirt and all. Of course the people I worked for were uptight (like this guy Birleson seems to be) - I made a joke to one of the sales people (I was not in sales) that I was growing a pony tail and within 10 minutes my boss had scoured the office, found me, and demanded to know why I was growing a pony tail! She let me know in no uncertain terms - no ponytail.
IBM used to have a dress code identical to Burleson's, a long time ago. Form over function almost always wins in this society - it's all for the children - manipulated by those who want us in another form - socialism, no guns, etc.
