RE NFL players, I don't either! The first couple of weeks set a new baseline for pain (and I had a couple of doozys!).

That old joke about "Take care of your knees; you're going to miss them when they're gone," wasn't so much of a joke after all…

mb

NFL players have better health care.

From the time of injury, within 24 hours, they've had an MRI and a team of physicians looking into the injury.  Within the next 48 hours they've already had the surgery to correct the issue and don't get the opportunity for the joint to seize up.  Afterward they have 24 hour therapy to get them back on the field...  After all, they're cattle...nothing more!

When I blew out my knee, it took me two weeks to find a doctor to treat me and another 6 weeks to get an MRI done to see what kind of damage I'd done.  In the meantime, my knee atrophied into a 30 degree angle that only removal of the meniscus could correct.

With the exception of my kidney stones, the pain was as bad as I've felt in my lifetime the first time the therapist bent my knee back to 90 degrees.  Full motion took another 10 visits...

In another thread we are talking about missing others, and how this place is a great fit for like minded folk.  Lookie hear at the drift!

I can show you the exact move in football that did both my knees in.  Right one locked up in May 1984, and I had the left done as a preventative measure before I destroyed it like the right.  When the right one was done the surgeon told me that it would need replacing within 25 years.  I have not pampered it, I have not had it replaced, but I do have several warnings that the day is coming.

Surgeon I had was the ortho surgeon for the Minnesota Vikings, and he listed three things that could cause mine.  Number one he listed was the move that did it.

Skiing at 11 and 20 years (or more) of black diamond mogul runs...at least two of those years were AFTER my meniscus was removed!  I got back into skiing at 47 for two seasons before my crash pretty much ended my skiing future.

God, don't remind me of that. I used to cringe when the guy from "therapy", would come into the room pushing the empty wheelchair for me to get in. For the next hour I would welcome death. I remember afterward laying in my bed sweating, waiting for the nurse to come in with a hypo full of Demerol.

Mike,

I lunched my left knee pushing my car out of the snow. (Yet another reason I moved to Arizona). I had my ass on the trunk, and my foot up against a lamp post. When I gave it all I had, I could hear everything rip. It almost immediately filled with blood from all the internal tearing. I made it to the hospital, and the doctor told me he would have to operate. They did 2 days later. I thought it would be a cake walk. Boy, was I ever mistaken!

I was in the hospital for a week, and on narcotic pain meds for almost 2-1/2 months. Off work for 3. I couldn't run for almost a YEAR! Then, if that wasn't enough, I had adhesions. (The skin healed and stuck to the bone). I had to go back into the hospital, be put under again, and have "closed manipulation" done to break it free. It was without question, the most painful experience I've ever been through. I don't know how some of these NFL players do it?

Gee you guys are making me cringe about all of that knee stuff.  Thankfully, mine aren't a problem.  I used to do stairs 12-15 hours a day offshore but that only lasted 10 -11 years.  However, all of this extra weight I wear due to an office job is beginning to wear on my knees when I get up and down.

Keep talking about all of the blood and gory meniscuses and things and your guys are gonna make me lose weight.

Do it!  Between the knees and low back I wish I had dropped another person long ago.  Of course, this is being said by a guy who just finished frying up 7 pounds of wings and coating them with Hooters 3 Mile Island sauce  ;D

Low carbs works....don't need to eliminate them all...... since September, I'm down 40 lbs.

WOW.  Congratulations.   Maybe that's just the motivation I need to cut back some.
