American Marksman Contest
« on: January 22, 2016, 02:28:18 PM »
Outdoor Channel is doing a new competition called American Marksman (AM).  Shoot .22lr pistol and rifle.  Simple course of fire, time less points down.   No moving, no reloading.

Anybody have more information?   Is this SG or SUSA backed or something different OC is doing with another group?

They say it's for amateur shooters only and they will weed out any sponsored shooters or sanctioned competition winners.

I believe MB is producing it, so he may have more.

The lead level in my blood must be low, because before I got a third of the way through I was ready to register.

Some of the first "local" scores are posted.    Amateurs, huh?

There 4 strings of fire of 10 shots and 2 strings of 5 shots.   I was thinking 6 seconds per string for 10 shots and 5 seconds for the 5 shot strings with a raw time of 30 seconds.  Then add penalties.

So one score was shot in a raw time of 13.57 down 10 points for a net score of 23.57.  Another shot in 18.66 with only 2 penalty points.

I'm going to do 200 rounds more practice this week then shoot for score next week.  I doubt if I'm anywhere near those scores.  In fact I'll be happy to net 50.

Visited the host range for my local competition and chatted with the RO.  He hasn't actually run anybody yet, so we talked through the COF.  His concerns are the same as mine about using .22lr.  Not the most reliable round.   And we may find it hard for the timer to detect rifle shots.  I'm going back next week to shoot for score and he agreed we should do some testing before the actual COF.

So more local scores are posted and I'm impressed.   One of the lower pistol scores is 15.79 seconds with no penalties.   Let me break that down

6 Strings of fire
Each string of fire has 5 bullseyes.
4 string of fire are double tap (10 rounds each bullseye) and 2 are singles (1 shot to each bullseye.)

So lets break it down.

-- There are 20 double taps, so let's say the split is 0.1 second.  That eats up 2 seconds

-- Then there are 6 reaction times and a really good shot could do 0.5 seconds which eats up 3 seconds.

-- So to shoot the COF in 16 seconds you have only 11 seconds left for the splits between bullseyes.   This equates to 0.4583 seconds between bullseyes.

Doable?   I think the Master shooters can easily do this.

But now I notice one shooter has logged 13.97 with only 4 penalty points.  Wow!

I hope to at least come in 50%tile.   Just don't let my gun jam.

I have arranged to do one of my weekly swaps in Minneapolis, and there is a host range close.  Will be stopping in there next week to check it out.  The timer issue is interesting.  My timer picks up the .22, but I will ask on that as well.

Yesterday at the outdoor range, I used my IDPA timer app on my phone for the .22lr rifle.   My 10/22 is disturbingly quiet, but it's easier to change the app sensitivity than the Pact 3 timer's.

BIG PROBLEM:  My Buckmark won't run 50 rounds with out a hangup.   Several in fact.  A couple of failure to feeds and several times it stopped short of going all the way into battery.   Does not seem to be magazine dependent.    I had given it a general bushing out and oiling.  I am using CCI Standards because of the relative low recoil and noise.

So this week I'm dropping by an indoor range and testing my 22/45 and Mk I.   I "point" better with the Buckmark, but that won't matter a hill-of-beans if the gun doesn't function.

On the plus side, the 10/22 hasn't had a single problem.

My 10/22 works so well that when some bad ammo blew the extractor with its plunger and spring out it still worked most of the time. It takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. Most problems with it are related to aftermarket magazines. I haven't really put my pistols through the ringer but they seem to work okay. I've read that a lot of .22s prefer mini-mags. You might want to try them Alf.

Problem is with Mini-Mags I then have a much greater recoil.

Hmm.  Malfunction or recoil?  Which to choose?

Alf,

I use CCI Standard Velocity in my Ruger Mark III bullseye gun.  They run almost flawless*.

*
1.  I need to remember to clean the gun midway through league (after about 300 rounds), because the .22lr exterior lube builds up on the bolt.  When the lube builds up it isn't a lube.  It is a sticky coating.
2.  A couple times a year I will get a failure to feed or go into battery.  This is independent of the lube build up.  I think it is a magazine issue (happens with two of 12 magazines), but I have not confirmed this.

Standard Velocity does not run well in my Kimber 1911 .22lr.  I believe it is the lack of power to run the slide.  I have never had an issue with full power .22lr, but SV is very unreliable in this gun.  I have never tried them in my 10/22, because that gun will shoot el cheapo ammo great.
