I get those notifications about people I am connected to all the time.  I went a few years without even going to LinkedIn, and decided it was time to update my employment.  Looked on Facebook, and John hasn't posted there in years.  Lots of birthday wishes to him, but nothing from him since September 2013, and February 2013 last here.  He just went dark.

Assuming he is still living, based on comments in birthday wishes to him.

Every now and then I run across his e mail address and send a note .
Have not seen or heard of him anywhere else.
