I'm considering a Para Tac 4....
« on: October 16, 2008, 08:59:45 PM »
I'm considering buying a used Para Tac 4. It is green as opposed to the stainless finish today. Does anyone know anything about this gun as to whether it was a reliable gun, etc? I do have a Carry 9 that bought recently and I am getting used to it now; so far so good. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
George

Are you sure it's a Tac-Four or maybe a Tac-S?  LDA high cap or single stack?

Is this it? 13+1 4.25" LDA. That's the only size Para double-wide I don't have yet. Some people consider it to be the ultimate 1911 as far as size, capacity, and trigger.

They sure are PURTY!!!  Too bad they hold too many rounds...can't have it up here..Well not new anyway..I'd buy one used if I could find one.  Problem is people don't give away high cap pistols around here.  They get top dollar for them.....

They make 10-round mags for them for too.

I know but the pistol ain't been approved in MA yet.  The only way I could get one is if it's pre-ban and I think they came out after 2004.  Besides, I have ten round mags for my LTC, they just stick out a little...At any rate, I've heard nothing but GOOD things for that LDA trigger system but I've not yet had a chance to shoot one.

It looks like the picture Jumofrank posted and it is a high-cap. I believe it has a 13 round magazine. Another question: if it comes with a 10 round mag, will a 13 round mag work with it?

When I picked it up, I fell in love. The trigger, the grips, pure pleasure. I know you know how it is. I just want to be sure before I spring for it, so I'm asking those who have them or had them what they think. Judging by past posts in another thread it's good, but I know opinions can change.

Frank, considering how many pistols Para makes, you must have one heck of a collection! Which is your favorite and why?

Thanks for any help any of you can provide!

Hahaha. I don't have one of everything. I wish I had that kind of money to spend on guns. I have a 10-shot 3" .45, a 12-shot 3.5" .45, and 14-shot 5" .45. I'm just missing the 13-shot 4.25" .45. I like the full sized one the best because I built it myself and after 20 years it's like an old friend. I have a sentimental attachment to it and it works great with my Carbine Conversion Unit. I haven't shot the LDA 12-.45 enough to have an opinion other than I love the trigger, the size, and the way it feels in my hand. The P-10 is nice too and I can get all my fingers on it since I got the Pearce grip extensions, but the 12-shot with an extra 1/2" of barrel is a lot better. If I knew how good the 12-shot compact would feel in my hand I wouldn't have got the 10-shot sub-compact. It's becoming my favorite.

Any Para high-cap pistol that comes with a 10-round restricted-capacity mag instead of the normal capacity can take the other mags too. You can also use 14, 15, and aftermarket 20-round mags in any of them. And you can use 12-round mags in a P-10, 13-round mags in a 12-shot pistol, 14-round mags in a Tac-Four, etc. They may wiggle around a bit and may cause an occasional malfunction, but it works as an emergency backup. Plus it's just fun to put a 20-round mag in a 3" pistol and blast away.  ;D

P.S. The only reason I used the Warthog as my avatar is because I didn't have to shink the picture down as much.

Never had any problems with my Para LDAs (have the Carry 9 on the road with me this week). I have read on some of the competition forums that the LDAs were "fragile," but the P-18 I shot in competition never even hiccuped...worked every bit as well as my trick SA 1911s  and a heck of a lot better than a couple of this "super high quality can't go wrong with" overrated pieces...
