Ammunition Laws
« on: June 19, 2007, 07:39:27 PM »
I just got back from a gun shop, first time there, did not know the proprietor.

He informed me that in 2008 and 2009, new laws take effect that Clinton had passed as part of some appropriation bill that affect ammunition manufacture in this country, namely that all ammo mfg'd after 2008 or '09 must be instantly traceable. He said that is why all casing, bullet, and cartridge prices have been going up so much. He's selling .308 NATO for $15/100.

Does anyone here know of this? Is this even remotely true - a bill clause that does not take effect for 8 years don't sound right, but I wouldn't put it past the Klintoons to do this. But what is it? And why has it been so silent when it is supposed to take effect so soon?

He also said Colt had been sold to a European firm. News to me, but then I've been on the road a bit.

Thanks.

I take some notice of the current ammo prices due to working in a gun shop. I have never heard of such a silly comment other than when we mess with customers. There is also a game called Malarky i think where you make up a good sounding lie. The ammo costs are up due to the fact that we are at war. Ammo manufactures are 24/7 non stop spending most of the time making quality Ammo or war efforts. NOT CHEAP STUFF! There is civil unrest in Africa where two of three  worlds largest heavy metal mines are not producing do to conflict. So loading componaint prices are rising. Not to mention the cost of fuel which raises the $ of everything. Someone asked me today about cheap$ 45LC. My short awnser....."No short $ 45LC, even the cheap stuff is expensive." And what do I get for my honesty, A f-bomb. Another unhappy person that didnt stock pile ammo and blame us for not buying low and saving it all for them. My rant is finished......for now. ;D

Pathfinder, I've got someone who would literally buy all the .308 he could at 20 cents a round. 1,000,000 rounds would be ok. Mini guns devour ammo. Tex is right, There is no longer any surplus .308 to be had. I have heard that countries that have it won't sell it to us because of their disagreement with the war. For sure when my friend stepped up to the plate to buy that much, the best I came up with was 100,000 rounds linked for a mini gun at 40 cents a round. 40,000 dollars to feed something that can chew it up @ 6,000 rounds per minute.

He was smart though and cornered the market on 8mm mauser for his vickers and MG42.

Are'nt we all glad we put some away for a rainy day?

I too would also buy almost anything in .308 at 20 cents a round, except maybe the Indian stuff which I do run across every so often. I have some Hirtenberger stashed too, won't say where or how much. Ditto for the hard to reload South African stuff (Berdan primed). Don't want any, uh, "visitors" looking to feed a mini-gun habit!   :D

I am looking to get into reloading, and was looking for once-fired brass. I had a chance - once upon a time - to get some Lake City never fired brass at 10 cents, now the guy won't let it go - period, and he owns a gunshop! I was quite surprised at this guy's cost per casing for uncleaned once fired  :'( , and even more the excuse I was given - I knew about the good surplus going to the war effort - if I were there I would want an M-14 in my hands over the M-4, personal preference. When you each out and touch someone with an M-14, they tend to stay touched.

So, I came here just looking for clarification on this guy's specific excuse. Thanks to all who have or will respond, BTW, sounds like his personal opinion rather than a reality. But, with the Klintoons, one never really knows, best to verify.

Pathfinder, I don't know if they have any left, but I bought 2,000 rounds of decommissioned Lake city match, 1966 brass from Graf and sons. Check there website, and there was another called thebrassguy.

Good luck.
