Glock 34

what is your opinion of the Glock 34?

I saw where the IDPA shooters prefer this gun about 3-1 over te others
I want to start competing in idpa and ipsc at the beginner level

Just like all Glocks, it is a great weapon. Just keep your barrel nice and clean... and don't shoot reloads unless you change out the barrel.... and you can shoot any Glock thousands and thousands of times before any big maintenance. The G34 is good.. but a little long for me personally. I prefer a G19 (fits my hands perfectly) or even a G17..which is basically the same as the G34, except the barrel is a little shorter and balance seems better to me personally. You will find that some people don't like Glock and will try to steer you away from them. However, if you talk to people that own Glock.. they almost always own more than one and they all have given the gun a "fair shake" thus.. reserving judgement until they actuallly shoot the gun a few thousands rounds or so.. then most people love Glocks. If you do get a Glock.. I would shoot at least 500-600 rds.. before I would consider it "broke in." Good luck!

The G34 is a great starter pistol, inexpensive but shootable, mags were cheap, but still are compared to STI, Para wide bodies. Easy to accessorize without a gunsmith. Get a good set of sights ( warren/sevigny's I like ), good holster, 5 mags and go play.
 
I think you should always get your feet wet and make sure you like it, ( the game or the training ) before investing big dollars.
Glocks don't depreciate much either, Nor do STI's

I believe Hawkfish meant lead bullet reloads...I don't believe there would be a problem with jacketed.  Correct me if I'm wrong please.  I also believe the 34 is popular because of the price, extended sight radius and that it was purpose built along with the 35 for compitition.  You can use other Glocks as well as other TT (Tactical Tupperware) in IDPA and USPSA/IPSC.  Other manufacturere have purpose built models also.

Back when I was competing a little, I shot the original 17L a fair amount. I upgraded that to a 34 when it became available and I still shoot it occasionally. They are great guns, easy to control when shooting rapidly and the longer sight radius does help accuracy. In fact, one of my students today at SRI was shooting one here specifically because he felt it gave him an advantage in the competition. (yes, I do have issues with SWAT cops gaming instead of training.... and I rant about it a couple of times during each training session.... ).

The G34 is a great handgun.  I shot a G35 for a couple of years in IDPA (ESP/SSP) and USPSA (both Production and Limited).  I like the sight radius (a little longer than the standard guns), and the 4.5lb trigger (stock on the 34&35).  I chose the .40 over the 9mm (G35 over G34) for 2 reasons: 1) a bigger hole - comes in handy for IDPA shooting minor power factor, and 2) in USPSA Limited, it's actually competitive with mag extensions and a magwell.  Plus, my Dillon was already set up for .40. 

As for shooting reloads - just keep the barrel clean, and QC your ammo.  A double-charge will kill your Glock pronto.
