Sometimes, not very far away, you can see a bit of the future coming....(lord I hope not during my time) ! But the reality is that in some of our US cities of the SW this may only be a short time away.

Private Assassins Target Gangs In Guatemala
by John Burnett

All Things Considered, December 22, 2008 ·

Earlier this fall, the head of the Organization of American States warned that violent crime is an epidemic in Latin America, fueled by street gangs, drug trafficking and poverty. There, gun homicides are four times the world average.

In Guatemala, people have had enough of corrupt police and brutal extortions by gangs. They've turned to vigilantism. Lynch mobs and death squads are now commonplace. Twenty-five years ago, public enemy No. 1 was the leftist guerrillas who were at war with the government of Guatemala. They were branded subversives, delinquents, anti-social elements, and they were disappeared by death squads in the dark of night.

Today, the enemies of society are the maras, the street gangs whose members are estimated to number 80,000. And the violent campaign to eradicate them is called limpieza social, or social cleansing.

Very thought provoking article.
Chilling to think that it could one day become that bad here in this country.
I know there have always been 'hired killings' here, but not to that scale.
Do you agree with the philosophy of vigilantism to control rampant crime that is either ignored or perpetrated by the law?
Could it or will it ever get that bad here?
And, how far would you go (to protect your family) if it was happening in your hometown, and or you were directly involved?

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

If life devolved to the form they live there, absolutely.

Far enough.

People confuse being a Christian with being some form of Rodney King - can't we all just get along let's-join-hands-and-sing-kumbaya weak willed individual. Christ was a tough guy, took a whip to people in the Temple in Jerusalem, called people hypocrites to their faces. For us to walk in His footsteps, we have to be willing to stand up to evil, face it squarely and destroy it when it rises.

So, if the gummint is violent and/or corrupt, and unable/unwilling to stop the criminals or gangs, then we have every right - legally and morally - to protect ourselves by whatever means.

Just ike the folks in the town in Missouri (?) did when they whacked the local bad guy who was allowed to run rampant and the law was unable or refused to intervene. You have to protect yourself and your families - it was done long before there was anything even remotely looking like a gummint.

We ARE the government, if the politicians are corrupt it is because we allow it. If our neighborhoods are over run with crime, it is because we allow it.
I'm Not advocating individual initiatives, but if the COMMUNITY wants their streets back it is the communities responsibility to take action and a candlelight vigil ain't gonna cut it.

Some of the most notorious and dangerous criminals in the United States are part of one gang.  It's not the Bloods, it's not the Crips, but a gang called MS-13.  'Live and Direct' takes MSNBC into the streets to investgate how the gang is terrorizing neighborhoods and treating their friends and enemies with brutal, bloody force.

Nearly half of all gang members in the US are Hispanics. The next biggest group is blacks. If the Hispanics were deported that would take care of half of the gang problem.

The problem with "hired guns" is that they are not necessarily motivated by the same value as their employers.

This applies to both the unofficial and official hired guns.

In the article, it is the corruption of the official hired guns that leads to the use of the unofficial hired guns.

As Tom said, the duty and responsibility lays with us to first police the official hired guns and if that is not possible through official channels, then by force, preferably without the assistance of unofficial hired guns.

Now, if all hired guns had the values of Richard Boone's character, Paladin, we would not have any problems.
