Hey if you have a chance two TV shows on History International channel are on tonite (on Directv its #271). Mountain Men (2 hours) and then Carson and Cody (2 hours) about Kit Carson and Buffalo Bill Cody. I have watched both shows before and they are well worth it. Record them if you don't have time tonite !

tt11758, keep an eye out for the other half of "the hunter heroes" .. Boone and Crockett. They seem to only show these particular histories maybe once a year now. But they are really great.

Is it Mountain men the movie ( Charleton Heston and Bran Keith? ) or a documentary, which would be good too. 1 of my faves ;D ;D ;D

I love the movie also. But this is a 2 hour show on the mountain men of the 1800's.

Unfortunately it is the documentary ...  Don't get me wrong, because it is a great show, and I love it.  However, I was working at the desk with it on and missed a lot.  It is one of those shows, just like Hunter Heroes that is on now is, that a person needs to pay attention to to learn all they are offering.

I'm still trying to catch the name of the trapper that the Jeremiah Johnson bear attack story is based on.  They did a bit on him in Mountain Men, but I missed his name.  It is one of those details I've heard before, but it just won't stick in my memory  :'(

That just might be one Jedediah Smith 1799-1831.

Mention of the grizzly brings to mind a close call with one by Smith in 1823, an encounter which marred his head for life, but certainly demonstrated his courage. James Clyman, another mountain man and an eye-witness to the bear's attack, described what happened--a situation, which in the colorful idiom of the mountain man came from the lips as: "Hyar's damp powder and no fire to dry it." The grizzly had taken Smith's head within its jaws and had thrown the man to the ground. Before his companions could kill the bear, Smith was badly mauled, but remained fully alert. Clyman then proceeded to dress the wounds of Smith, but told him that he (Clyman) despaired for one of Smith's ears, torn almost off and dangling from his head. Unabashed by Clyman's remark, Smith insisted that the former "stick [it] up some way or other," whereupon Clyman sewed the ear back in place as best he could with a needle. Then, Smith spent ten days recuperating, while the other men explored Sioux country (the Black Hills in this instance).

Another witness to Smiths mauling was a youngster on his first trip, Jim Bridger.

Here is another question...I remember one story of a mountain man who was I think attacked by Indians, stabbed, stripped and left for dead. His party deserted him (I think Kit Carson was one of them) and he walked like 200 miles naked with no supplies to the nearest fort and survived. Was it Bridger? Somehow I remember it was Bridger?
