Took it shooting today
« on: January 19, 2009, 10:07:08 PM »
Living in a larger city where liberals don't like guns, I thought it would be hard to find a place to shoot my gun (Several pistol ranges but I didn't know of any rifle) I found one that is really great and is only about 20 minutes from my house. For all of you that can shoot out your back door, shut up! Plus it was only ten bucks for as long as I wanted to stay. I was there about two hours and then the sun went down.

I used the 100 yard range to sight in my scope. At first I was really disappointed. I could not hit the broad side of a barn. a little patience and some practice and I was grouping them at about 4 inches. I was pretty happy considering my first shot barely hit the paper.  I love this gun too. It shoots like a dream and almost no kick at all. (Lightened parts or something is what JP told me)

Now all I need is a babysitter so I can take my wife. Well, gotta go. My wife told me I have to get my gun case off the bed.

That's great, Thanos.    It's been too cold or rainy here to go outside.  This Friday though is looking good.

HOWEVER, you owe us some more info and pictures if you can.

What type of rifle and sights?
What is the range and where is it located?  There may be others in you community that would love to find a place to shoot as well.

Here are my targets. I was shooting in three round groups to figure out where I was hitting and then making some adjustments. I forgot my screw driver and I had to tear apart a pen to get the metal clip so I could make the adjustments. The first two targets have about 25 rounds and the last 20 rounds through it. Later a guy let me borrow his screw driver. I felt a little stupid asking but he offered and gave me some shooting pointers. It has been a long time since I last shot.

I was using a JP-15

Using a Tirjicon Acog with red dot reticle (I need to sight in the red dot, took two shots and misssed completely) It was pretty easy to  get it sighted in, but I was running out of daylight and it was getting cold. 4x Magnification with adjusted reticle for 100, 400 and 600 yards.

I was using Wolf 55 gr ammo (I know, cheap crap, but I have 1000 rounds and figured i should use it up)

I found the range by going on the NRA website
http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/findlocal.asp
and they have a list of the ranges, I went and looked at several with websites and checked them out on the web to see what they had. The one I went to is in Kenmore, WA and has a 100, 300 and two pistol ranges (Archery range too) The only down side was having to the rule that you can only load one round at a time. But that is not a big deal as the provided spotting scopes and was very professional, they are also open 360 days a year. The local gun shop that my wife bought my pistol at only allows pistols and 22LR rifles, although they are inside.

Why buy a Pinto when you need a BMW? I could only have one rifle for a while, so I chose very carefully.

Well, yes I think you did VERY well.

And I think as you work out the fine points of shooting from a bench (or prone), you'll get better groups.  And especially if you can try other ammo.   If that's a fast twist (1-9") and you can find some 60gr ammo, you might try that just to see if it groups better.

Good for you finding a nice range.   Single loading is probably best for bench rest shooting.   Gives you a moment to prepare for the next shot and let's the barrel cool down.  And you're not as tempted to rush the next shot.   I'm just sorry your range is on the opposite side of the continent from me, but some other forum users may find the info useful.

it is a 1-9 twist and my next box of ammo is going to be 60gr.

Congrats Thanos, your last target was getting there, and not real impressive, until you mentioned using wolf ammo, any rifle that will group like that with the cheap stuff, is a keeper, I think when you go to premium ammo or your own reloads, the rifle is going to shine. ;D
