You know I've done some thinking about this...

I'll bet a box of shells that the guys doing the shooting where already prohibited from owning guns.

Any takers?   ;D

I'll bet a box of shells that it's illegal to kill or maim people in Florida, whether they used a gun to do it or not ;-)

Quote
It's just like terrorism. The problem is not always HOW the person went about their actions, but WHY. If we address they WHY part, then in the long term, we would be working toward a society where people don't hate each other (or themselves) enough to open fire in a crowd or strap a bomb to themselves. Banning the method the person used to kill is just treating the symptom without addressing the real problem (which may be different in each case, making people THINK a little about it instead of just having a knee-jerk reaction).

The WHY is a very hotly contested issue, with no actual answer in sight, is it poverty, is it depression, is it a bad neighborhood, is America's foreign policy?  it's probably none and all, any mix of whatever.  what you do is treat each case individually, for regular crime and for terrorism you use a very heavy hand until the terrorists are driven from their hideouts by the communities in which they hide.  Loss by attrition.  Its the only way it has worked, look at the Philippines, and is the only way it will work.

What's interesting is that V-P Biden's "guarantee" to the weasel mayor of Miami to ban assault weapons seems to have disappeared. Wonder why that might be?

I spent a lot of time in Liberty City back in the mid-1980s during the drug wars...good place for a journalist to be back then! Was crazy dangerous then; is crazy dangerous now. +1 for Tom Bogan...just a few law-abiding citizens shooting craps on the sidewalk...

How do they know it was an AK 47?  Or is this just a convenient event to demonize guns.  I know that it may very well have been an AK and I assume they have 7.62 x 39 casings, and witnesses said it was an AK, but that doesn't mean it is.  The media frequently gets firearm information wrong in their reporting.  I once saw Dan Rather cal an M-1 carbine an AK 47.  It has such a much more evil tone to it and suits the antis better.

I've read about a dozen different news sources on this shooting and to their credit most do NOT specify AK-47, though they do all say it was an "assault weapon".   Most are just reprinting the AP report.  I can't access to original (and complete) AP release, only what the various news organization reprint, it doesn't appear AP  used "AK-47".

HOWEVER, CNN quotes Chief Timoney as saying it was an AK-47.   They are the only news source with such a quote.

The Sun Sentinel does say "According to detectives, a man with an AK-47 assault rifle..."   (un-named detectives, of course)

The Miami Herald, however only makes this reference:

"Kendra said she noticed a man outside pulling a gun from his waistband.
''Big, like an AK-47,'' she said."

WAISTBAND?   AN AK-47?

well, why not, he was probably wearing those baggy pants and they were hanging down around his ass. Haven't you seen that video about why school kids shouldn't wear baggy pants. It showed him pulling about a dozen guns out of his pants including a pump shotgun.
