Walther P22
« on: January 24, 2009, 06:43:28 PM »
i purchased a Walther p22 about two mos. ago.  Have put about 300 rounds through it.  While cleaning have noticed a gouging of metal on the underside of the slide just to the rear of the extractor.  There is a machined cutout in the slide, on each side, and it is the forward section of this cutout that is being gouged.  this area seems to be aligned with the two ears( dogs, lugs, etc.) that are part of the trigger assy. and will rise about  1/32 inch when the trigger is squeezed, initiating recoil.  Upon last field stripping I noticed fine, bright metal shavings just forward of these ears.  Apparently the slide is made of aluminium as gouging is quite bright.  I am using "normal 22lr ammo., remmington  thunderbolt and federal champion.  Has anyone encountered a similar problem?  Will probably send piece back to Walther for a fix.  not a cheap gun and would expect better from a name brand.

There have been some(not a lot) problems with the P22's slide. The slide is made of a zinc alloy IIRC. If you are having a problem contact S&W/Walther customer service and they will be happy to help you from what I have heard.

I gave my wife one of these for Xmas, She absolutely loves it. I took it apart to clean it after she shot about 150 rounds out of it since new. I have the exact same issue. I called Walther\S&W, the guy I finally got on the line asked, "did it malfunction?" I say, "no but it's full of shavings and is gouged on both sides, that can't be good" He says " it's normal wear in it will eventually stop"
Not being satisfied with that answer, I did some googling and found an excellent book on the rimfire central forums. search for "1917/1911 p22 bible" This guy has laid out exactly what to do to fix this problem that obviously Walther and S&W could give a **** about. Man I wish I had found it before shooting it so I could have prevented the wear that has already occurred. I haven't had time to modify it yet but it will be corrected before it is shot again. I seriously doubt I will spend any more money on a new Walther or S&W anytime soon if this is any indication of the QA there. After doing some reading it seems this problem has been going on since this thing hit the market. You would think that they would have sense enough to correct the problem by now. It's a shame since it is a neat little .22

Very glad I read this topic.  My local gun shop has two P22's one in green and one in camo...they both look like they'd be fun to shoot, I guess I'll hold back and keep looking.

Maybe a nice 9 shot revolver.

I've shot one extensively and my last thread indicated that the P22 should be melted down for plastic Army guys.  I agree, for three hundred bucks you should get a little more quality in a .22 auto.  I'm not too thrilled with any of Walther/S&W offerings of late.

I stand by my opinion, it's a turd... :P

The p22 seem to be hit or miss.   My grandfather has one that runs perfect, my cousin has one that won't go thru a mag with out a malfunction.

I guess I've been fortunate. I bought the kit that contained both barrels. After several thousand rounds, I've only noted a couple of stoppages, and that was in the early going. The barrel weight had a proclivity to loosen after extended use, but that was solved with a bit of loctite.

From what I'm hearing here it seems to depend on the manufacturer whether it's a gem or a turd.
By the way, did you know you really CAN polish a turd. Mythbusters or one of those shows did a piece on it, you have to compress it under high pressure to get the water out then use very fine abrasive.  ;D

Yes, but can you pick it up from the clean end?    ;D
