Remington 760 30-06

Hey yall,
I just baught my father-n-law's gun collection. In the bunch, there is an old but perfect 760 in 30-06. I haven't messed with one of these before. Have any of you ever had a run in with one.

Good rifle, not known for outstanding accuracy, but a great woods or forest gun.  Light and fast handling, in 30/06 can be a pounder if you still have the plastic butt plate. It needs to be kept clean in the chamber and bolt area, for reliable operation, and if you reload, use a small base die set, and full length resize.

Enjoy it, and take it hunting, that's where it shines.

Here in Pennsylbama they are very common. Since the FUDDS who run this state have a problem with autoloaders (Banned for hunting) the Remington pumps are the preferred Deer rifles, second only to the 30-30 lever guns.

At least three of my neighbors use them, and every gun shop has them in the used gun racks. Last week I was buying wood from a sawmill when my buddy noticed one in a gun cabinet in the owners office! The owner said he has probably taken 40+deer with it over the years. Had the skulls/antlers to prove it too.

Years ago I have the 760 308 carbine and it was a great gun, fast and short. Loaned it to a friend and he went bowling that night ( small Town) and some bastard stole it and his shotgun our of his pickup. I replaced it with a 742 308 carbine my oldest son shoots and swears by. Keep them clean and enjoy.

Went to Wally World and picked up some Silver Tips. I am going to see what this old thing will do. If the rain will hold off, I will shoot some 100 yards groups with it. I'll let yall know how it turns out.

Well, the results are in. At 100 yards with a good rest and an old Simmons 3x9x40, the high priced Win. loads went into a one and a half inch group. The el cheapo Rem. loads where close to an inch. The best group with the cheap stuff was just under an inch, but that was just one group. The other three groups of three were right at an inch. The best group of Win. loads was just over an inch and the worst was my fault at about two inches. Still, I think it's a good old gun. Did you know these have 14 locking lugs - seven on each side of the bolt. It is a bit rough on the shoulder. After 50 rounds, I was done shooting this .06 for a while. I switched to the .22 mag. By the way, the 22 mag was not nearly as accurate.
