Remember The Alamo!!!
« on: March 06, 2009, 04:12:01 PM »
Received this from a friend today and thought I would share with you all...

Today marks the anniversary of the day that the Alamo fell.  I pray that our society can continue to breed the courage for brave sacrifices against insurmountable odds….
From the Alamo website….

The final assault came before daybreak on the morning of March 6, 1836, as columns of Mexican soldiers emerged from the predawn darkness and headed for the Alamo's walls. Cannon and small arms fire from inside the Alamo beat back several attacks. Regrouping, the Mexicans scaled the walls and rushed into the compound. Once inside, they turned a captured cannon on the Long Barrack and church, blasting open the barricaded doors. The desperate struggle continued until the defenders were overwhelmed. By sunrise, the battle had ended and Santa Anna entered the Alamo compound to survey the scene of his victory.

People worldwide continue to remember the Alamo as a heroic struggle against impossible odds — a place where men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. For this reason, the Alamo remains hallowed ground and the Shrine of Texas Liberty.

TexGun, Thank you very much for the reminder. The battle that took place at the Alamo is one of those key character definers. I pray also that America will not forget what brave men died for that day and in countless other conflicts around the world during the last couple of centuries.

As someone who has always been cynical about the chest thumping, flag waving, lapel pin wearing kind of pariotism; I found myself very moved when  I visited the Alamo. This was the real kind, and its worth remembering.

My grade school years were spent in part of Jenkins county Georgia that was originally Burke county.  Some sources say Jim Bowie's family at one time lived in Georgia, before settling in Louisiana.  As a kid I imagine that I was exploring some of the same woods Bowie did, maybe when he was my age.   I also figured he was a role model I would some day follow.....to stand up and fight for a cause.   And though I'm not a Texan, the Alamo has always been a special to me.

God save the Republic of Texas.  Any one can be a Texan, and I try to remind other Texans about, the original Texans were all from various states of the U.S., they came and took up arms for us.  So if your ever want to be of the greatest people in the world, bring your guns to Texas, buy an American truck, forget everything you know about talking grammer, and wait for those license plates.  "Cause I ain't to fond of them Californian boys that drive them foreign cars while they prance 'round talkin' the queen's english."

Victory or Death

Oh!  And you got to be able to whistle 'Dixie' and know the words, for any version you like.

Dixie was written by a YANKEE.  ;D
Also, If Crockett and Travis had obeyed orders they would not have died (there). They were ordered to withdraw to Goliad I think it was, because the Alamo was a lousy defensive position. But they got thinking with their little heads and got themselves all killed.

Dixie was written by an Ohio fellow years before the war.  And the battle of Goliad didn't work out for the unfortunate Texan soldiers, mostly wounded men, but I've never recalled that order.  Many argue that the stand at the Alamo gave Sam Houston the time he needed to maneuver his forces, and sparked the resolve of Texans to continue fighting.  And depending on what town or city your at in Texas, they hand out free ass whoopins for that kind of talk, fair warning. ;D  You should visit some time. ;)

I didn't mean a REAL Yankee like me, I meant a Northerner, actually I was thinking he was from Ill or NY.
I don't  precisely  remember whether it was Goliad they were supposed to retreat to but if the troops therewere mostly casualties it would make sense, that was another place Santa Ana massacred prisoners, in fact the battle cry at San Jacinto was "Remember Goliad and the Alamo"
As for the ass whoopin' if they are going to "Remember the Alamo" they should remember the TRUTH, warts and all. I've got no use for that liberal revisionist crap.
Been there ;D, It was a shock, I thought the swamps ended at the La. State line and was totally amazed at all the pine in East Texas. Got more like what I expected as I headed toward Brownsville along the coast then up toward Ft. Stockton.

I know that I've spent half my time on this forum arguing with you, but after living for six years in the  Chosen Land (Austin Texas, USA, Hook 'em Horns!) making comments like that.... I'd rather tell my girlfriend that her skirt makes her ass look fat. To quote Lyle Lovett "That's right you're not from Texas". He goes goes on to sing, "But Texas loves you anyway", me yes; you, probably not so much. Remember Serpintine!, Serpentine!, or at least duck and cover, 'cause remember how I was braggin' about how there's competency tests to get your ccw in Texas.....

assuring you that after that last post the eyes of Texas ARE upon you
