Many of us love and hold dearly at least one Ruger 10/22.  Some, though not me, even have had occasion to purchase the ever elusive 10/22 in 22 magnum. 

Since we know Ruger VP's sometimes scour the board (hope that catchy, sort of, title gotcha') what do ya'll think about a run of 10/22's in the 5.7 caliber that has been promulgated?  You can get that 40 grain bullet to 17HMR 17 grain bullet speeds...it would be a superior light weight semi-auto, eh? 

A centerfire in a rimfire package with better designed cartridge than say the old (and more powerful) 22 Hornet or the 22 rimfires.

OK...what do you guys think?

At this time I only have one 10/22.  It was used when I bought it and a Winchester 1200 Ranger (actually traded the smooth bore Winchester slug barrel for the Ruger) right after a house fire where I lost all my guns ... uninsured  :'(

I have used and used and used this little gun and never given it the credit for what it is.  I have had my eyes open for deals on them the last couple years, but have not been able to find any ... actually find one now and then, but not when I have the cash.  Any caliber that Ruger could put in this reliable and durable little package would be much appreciated.

The key to your thoughts and mine is they need to maintain Bill Ruger's mindset that they are gun people and if they build what they like we will like it.  My take on this is to quit screwing around with fancy marketing and chasing the competition, and build reliable, durable, guns that shooters enjoy shooting.  They don't need a bunch of researchers to do this if they have true shooters working for them!

OK.  Not much response here...maybe I should approach this differently.  What custom gun shop do ya'll know that may modify a Ruger 10/22M for 5.7 x 28?

I'm not up on the mini 14, but wouldn't what you are talking about be an accurized mini 14?

I was looking for lighter, easier to handle than the mini-14.  I don't think the action needs be so large as on the mini 14.  The 5.7 round is quite small, a rotary mag would be a big plus.  The mini is a good thought, but I was thinking it would be easier to scale up a 10/22 than scale down something else...just my pipe dreams I guess.

Wouldn't you need to redesign the bolt to position the firing pin to stike the primer instead of the rim ?

Yes, and the 5.7 case is not rimmed like the 22 either.

Just a guess, but I would be surprised to see the 10/22 offered in any caliber that requires MUCH more than a change in barrel/chamber,
