I wish the new cars looked new instead of 40 years old. Can't they come up with anything better?
Unfortunately,,,,NO The cars that we wish we could stand a chance of owning are deemed "prototypes" for release in 2012, or some other long term project.
Designers outpace the actual manufacturing process exponentially. It looks good on paper but in proto testing problems A,B,C,D, etc,... rear their ugly head.
Toyota and Honda can use an existing line to make many different models. Here in the US, we have to go through a "process" to change a line. Unions have their rules, overtime, scheduling, tooling, etc,...
By the time "someone" realized trouble, revamping the mustang, challenger, camaro(still waiting), is all they could muster. Ford seems to have planned for the worst better than the others. Legacy costs are eating them all up.
I had a 86 Mustang 5.0, and liked it alright, the first Anniversary Edition Stang was "designed" for the comeback of the 351 Cleveland, well the front suspension could not handle the extra weight, and handling was crap. Pretty much awesome if going only straight. Motor Trend mag has this archived in the late 80's.
The "New" looking cars take to long for delivery and cost more than the price point for sales with volume.
Yeah, they will sell
some Shelby's, ZO-6 Twin Callaway Turbo Vettes, 750hp Vipers, for $75,000+ but it won;t keep them afloat.
