Springfield Armory Recommendation
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:18:42 PM »
Hello Everyone:

Today I visted my local gun retailer with the intention of buying my first Glock.  However, the sales person informed me I should take a hard lock at the Springfield Armory XD series before I make a decision.  Any recommendations? I would like to stay with a 9mm or 45 to ensure ammo is always available.  I thank the forum members  for their expertise.

XD = Excellent alternative.

I did the same.  Went looking for a plastic, striker fired 9mm and ended up with the XD.  You won't have "everything glock" as accessories go, but there are plenty of XD aftermarket bling.  Plus, at the time, SA had a special on, so I ended up with 4 magazines and two mag pouches.

As far as caliber.  All three, 9mm, .40S&W and .45ACP, are in short supply in many places. Since I already had handguns in .40 and .45,  I wanted a 9mm to complement my Marline Camp-9 Carbine.   If I could only have one right now, I'd go for the 9mm because it's cheaper than the other two, so you'll get more shots per dollar.   That is unless you have some VERY specific requirements in mind, such as major/minor caliber in some competitions.

My local guns shop did not mentioned a special deal on the SA pistols.  Is this common knowledge for the dealers?

Thanks
John

 Try them both for feel, while the Glock seems to be a very reliable weapon the XD does have a more ergonomic grip.

The guys working at our local range don't like the XD's, because they don't hold up to the super extreme use that the rental guns receive. I own Glocks and I've shot XD's. I like them both and always felt that I'd like a Glock with a grip safety. One individual is never going to put either gun through as much torture as range guns go through.

Get whatever feels best to you. Not necessarily just in the grip, but when you're shooting them. Ergonomics doesn't mean anything until you're actually shooting. I've heard rumors that XD magazines have become more and more scarce and that they're a little finicky. Hopefully some XD people will ring in on that. I'd like to get one too.

40S&W is not going anywhere anytime soon.  The sheer number of LE agencys that adopted that will see to that.

Sorry but that offer expired.   Still the XD comes with a mag pouch and a magazine loader, in addition to the two magazines.  So you're still ahead of the game.
