 :'(  I can't buy either one of these "evil" little pistols....

Seems that when you own one, you become evil like the inanimate object your holding.....

a gun you may not want to over look... and yes it makes your decision so much harder. take a look at the s&w M&P from what i hear they are a great gun and i would own one over the xd merely because i dont like the chamber indicator and the striker indicator.  plus i like the trigger of the m&p better... i myself prefer glock to all three but thats me.  oh you didnt mention full size, compact or sub compact... that may interest you as well. the xd and the m&p in the sub compact come with extended grip mags but the glock does not. you can however buy extensions and longer mags for glock pretty easy.  so go to the store and the range rent all 3 of em try em out see which one your more accurate with and bam there ya go thats the gun for you
Don't let their IGNORANCE take away YOUR rights!!!

XD45 = 13 in the stack + 1 in the Pipe. ;D

My Primary  concealed carry weapon in a Comp-Tac Minotaur, and my favorite pistol to shoot.
Mine has a set of Williams Fire Sights on it.

Only catch, it will not feed Semi-Wadcutter style ammo. Ejection issues. Extracted case head hangs on the mouth of the next round. The slide does not have the "bump" on the bottom to push the top round down into the mag slightly giving room for the extracted round to clear it. Everything else feeds like green corn through a goose.
I don't know if this is the case with the 9 or not.
I recall you could send your pistol back to the custom shop and they would fix the slide so it would feed semi-wadcutters.

No experience with Glocks. Have handled a few, I Despise the Grip Angle.

I do like the M&P too, but there are still trade-offs. Smiths don't have the chamber loaded indicator and the striker indicator, but they do have a super-evil magazine disconnect. If something goes wrong with the two aforementioned XD parts, the gun will probably still work when the SHTF. With the Smith, if something goes wrong with the magazine, you're left with a paper weight. If you lose your magazine, or your magazine becomes inoperable for whatever reason, you should be able to fire at least the last round in the gun, or use it as a single-shot breach loader.

Glock M19 - M22, Springfield XDM 9.   All great shooters and hard to tell what one I like best.

If you ever get to a gun shop and see a Walther P99 pick it up and take a look.  Striker and loaded chamber indicator like the XD.  Adjustable back strap Like the M&P.  Very comfortable and a unique mag release.  When I first looked at it I thought it was in a silly place but it was Love after first mag drop!

Just to throw a wrench into things.

I would suggest the Glock or Smith and Wesson M&P. I know the Springfield has a match barrel. Nice, but who needs a match barrel when your gun should be good to go out of the box? I have found that with the firearms I suggested and you can find the gear to go with it.
I did check out the Walther P99 today. Nice, but not my cup of tea.
As for .40 Smith and Wesson rounds, you can find them easier around here than you can 9mm and .45. I am thinking of buying a Glock 22 so I am able to purchase ammo!!!!  :)

The XD-M has other upgrades too.. Some trigger work has been done and in some cases there are more capacity too.
