If I'm not mistaken I think some SS is slightly magnetic.  I know that some stainless will rust.

The spring itself is probably not stainless, so a magnet would work.

Back to the grips (I sometimes get way behind on some threads), I like the look and feel of wood cosmetically, I like the feel of Houge, but for a small pocket gun I like the wood for ease of draw.  I tried both when I bought my J frame, and the Houge almost always snagged on the pocket fabric, and in dress pants you end up with a tangled mess of pocket and gun.

Yes, 300 series is magnetic it depends on the make up of the alloy.  Also, all SS WILL rust eventually, it just resists it much better than non SS, the downside is that while on non SS you get surface rust that can be cleaned off with no pitting, if SS rusts it immediately pits

Hello.  I share your fondness for the SP101.  I have but one, but will probably buy another in the near future.  Mine is the 3 1/16" bbl version and remains as stock as when it left the factory, though it has been dry-fired quite a bit.  It's DA is heavy but smooth and it allows quick staging for accurate double-action work.

If interested, here are a few observations I wrote up a few years back:

http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/Ruger%20SP101%20Report.htm

This is one of the handguns that stays loaded and is frequently carried (legally) concealed.  It is normally carried with mid-range .357 loads these days, usually Corbon 125-gr. DPX.

My opinion has not changed after perhaps another thousand shots since the review was done; I still find them fun to shoot and so far, this one has proven depnedable as homemaid sin.

Best.

Nice looking Sp and Hawk
Ditto. Love Ruger wheel guns.

I've put another few hundred rounds through the little Snubby after installing a 10 pound main spring and smoothing the action a little bit.  It is actually easier to shoot accurately double action vs single action.  The trigger is getting rather buttery and doesn't have the grinding raspy feel it did when I bought it.  Still have a little work to do on the trigger itself, all my action work has been on the hammer and sear group.

I fired a few cylinders of Federal .357 Mag 158 gr HS today and it definitely lets you know you've gone full power magnum.  It hurts a bit but I don't shoot them for fun, only carry them for protection.

Still like this little gun, no doubt it'll be with me for some time!
