Does anyone have any experience with this handgun? I am thinking of making this gun a new member of my family. I know that I said I wasnt interested in 1911s before, but ever since I got my double stack para I have been wanting one. Anyways your opinions are always appreciated.
I have a '70 that I've had since....?......uh 1970. ;-)
It isn't real high mileage, maybe 2,000-3,000 rounds. I "tricked" it out with a flat mainspring housing, checkered plastic grips, adjustable sights and a recoil buffer. (Not just a "pad" but a buffer with an internal spring. ) It never liked those 185gr target loads, so all I shoot are full house, 230gr lead or sometimes FMJ.
The originals, like mine, have a split barrel bushing. It was suppose to return the front of the barrel to the same place every time and improve accuracy. I don't think it much difference accuracy-wise over properly fitted traditional bushings. It did make the barrel/bushing fit a little less critical. I think that it turned out to be the weak point of the gun though with higher than desirable breakage. (I really should try and find a spare......knock on wood.) Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's the one thing the reproductions don't reproduce.
