colt 70s series repro
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:53:16 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with this handgun? I am thinking of making this gun a new member of my family. I know that I said I wasnt interested in 1911s before, but ever since I got my double stack para I have been wanting one. Anyways your opinions are always appreciated.

It depends on what you want it for.  A lot of people like the new (and old) Series 70 to use as a platform for a custom SS because it doesn't have the Series 80 safety stuff added.  If you like it go for it!

I have a '70 that I've had since....?......uh 1970. ;-)

It isn't real high mileage, maybe 2,000-3,000 rounds.    I "tricked" it out with a flat mainspring housing, checkered plastic grips, adjustable sights and a recoil buffer.   (Not just a "pad" but a buffer with an internal spring.  )   It never liked those 185gr target loads, so all I shoot are full house, 230gr lead or sometimes FMJ.

The originals, like mine, have a split barrel bushing.  It was suppose to return the front of the barrel to the same place every time and improve accuracy.   I don't think it much difference accuracy-wise over properly fitted traditional bushings.    It did make the barrel/bushing fit a little less critical.   I think that it turned out to be the weak point of the gun though with higher than desirable breakage.  (I really should try and find a spare......knock on wood.)  Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's the one thing the reproductions don't reproduce.

Nice, Alf....I have an original Ser. 70 built almost the same way except on a nickel gun. It's my favorite of all of them.

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

Here's a picture of her stripped.   If I get inspired, I might take a whole series of shots next week, to get details of the collet, the sights and the original parts.

All this talk...................So I took her out today......my original '70 series

60 flawless rounds (230gr LRN).   Shot a B3 target at 7yds one mag slow fire, but the rest done at a reasonable pace (~1shot/2sec).    No black left on the paper.

I left the target hanging while I policed my brass and put everything back in the bag.  After all, it's not bragging if you can do it.   Lot's of envious looks.

These things are just a good looking apart as they are together.   ;D
