She is on point with her rhetoric (on this subject at least) but I bet she doesnt know the difference between a "clip" and a "mag".

Look, I like Meghan McCain. No, she's not a rocket scientist (neither is her dad, but he did know how to marry well). The point is, she speaks for most conservative leaning folks of my generation (40 and under). We are just not into social conservatism. We don't care about gay marriage, we take the right to choose as a given, we've all smoked pot and we're sick to death of hearing tired old men refight the vietnam war. We just don't care about that crap. I don't give a damn what you did in 1968, I wasn't born yet; leave it in the past. If the GOP wants to survive, it will have to do so on Libertarian principles; socially liberal, fiscally conservative and strong on defense. Otherwise, we've got better thngs to do The party of yesterday is no one's friend. Its not 1982 outside, and unless the GOP realizes that her ideas, however poorly phrased, are the future, they're doomed.

Those who neglect the past are condemned to repeat it. People like you who disregard the past and those who have sacraficed so you HAVE a future are why this country is so fu#ked up now  STFU sonny.

Didn't mean it like that Tom. Its just that I'm tired of three elections being dominated by Vietnam. Clinton's ROTC deferment, Kerry's heroism or lack thereof, Bush's reporting for duty or not and Cheney's 5 draft defferments from a war he supported. I'm not denying the sacrifices made. I am saying that there is a lot of residual anger on both sides (as displayed in your post) that my generation just doesn't, and shouldn't relate to. Is Clinton a draft dodger? Is Cheney? Did Bush go AWOL? Did Kerry embelish his record? None of those issues will sway my generation's vote.

But it should. They are using those times to point to real leadership or the lack there of.

Try to allow your tiny little brain (said with the utmost respect) to see past the fact that it was a long time ago. You have to appreciate that these were extraordinary moments in history when men were tested and were able to overcome some of the greatest challenges anyone could ever face. Down through history, these are the types of trials and tribulations that have produced some of the greatest leaders that our nation has ever seen...... and those are the types of men who make the best presidents and who we should want in the oval office. It should sway your vote. When you hear about the adversities that someone was able to overcome before you were even born, you should pay attention. You should realize how much it embodies real leadership, and you should understand that it is exactly the of the type of leadership America needs to sustain itself.

Eric
I get this, and what was meant as an off hand comment in my post is dominating what I think is the larger point. The thing is that Vietnam was a classic example of two timeless principles. The first is that the Framers had it right when they said only Congress had the power to declare war. The idea being that the people's representative's should collectively make that decision, not just one man, so it wouldn't be Johnson's war or W's war, it would be OUR war.
The second principle is that you never intervene in someone else's civil war. It's like the cops in a domestic dispute, you're always going to lose. In the case of Vietnam, it caused our very own (though much politer) civil war.
The (side) point I was trying to make is that we (the younger generation) see the Vietnam War clinically, as an historical example much like the Spanish American War. The older generation, as is obvious from these posts, still feels it viscerally. We don't. That is the sum total of the point I was trying to make. I do think the larger issue of Meghan McCain's points are instructive however.

PS Sorry for any offense in my initial post, either age wise or other wise.It is simply a sign of my impatience with folks either cynically, or sincerely dragging up old wounds for political advantage when we have pressing current and future problems on our plate. All of our current elder generation of leaders took a stand on that war, one way or another. They, and we, are stuck with that. I am a student of history, and I do understand that character counts. I also think though, that there is a lot to be said for not picking at scabs and reopenig old wounds. Vietnam is an experience we should learn from (as I have been reminded). It is not though, something that should dominate our political choices.

I normally don't jump in just to disagree with someone, especially about politics, because political opinions are like A-holes...everyone has one, some just stink worse than others.  However, as a member of your generation, FQ13, I have to say I completely disagree with you regarding just about everything you have posted in this thread.  I am a republican because, I am conservative.  I disapprove of gay marriage (its a religious union, if they want a civil union...fine).  If the republicans bend to accomodate RINOs then they have lost their bearing and purpose.  As for your views about the Vietnam war, I don't view it "clinically".  Maybe, that's because I have several friends who are veterans of that war and I have heard their stories and their feelings about it.  I also think that the military history of our past and future nominees is completely pertinent, as it reveals a lot about the character of the men.  Heck, 20 years from now the Presidential candidates Desert Storm records will be matters of public debate.  I can understand how your view could be a little bit askew, I mean you did vote for Obama.   ???  I don't really mean to bust your chops, but I thought others would like to know that your opinions are not shared by everyone from your generation.  (Their may be hope for us yet.)   ;D

Fair enough Swoop. I do wish I'd left the Vietnam thing out because it really was just brought on by being pissed at Rachel Maddow for going over Cheney's 5 deferments last night. I was thinking about how with all that's gone on, how this was the least our worries. Se la vie. As far as gay marriage, you do (mostly) agree with me. I don't care if they call it a marriage, a civil union or name it Steve, we are OK with it if it doesn't take place in our church. That's a whole different animal. I'm fine with civil unions instead of marriage. As a Christian I see it this way. A Christian marriage is a coveneant (contact if you will), between a man, a woman and God. A civil marriage (or union) is just a contract between two people, gay or straight, about rights and responsibilties. Nothing in favor of one or against the other, just two wholly different animals.

FQ13.....

You really need to avoid watching MSNBC.

Keith Olberman is the ugliest lesbian I've ever seen.  Rachel is quite an attractive man in her own right but as soon as either open their mouths, I get a little naceous...

With you watching, that would make a bakers dozen in viewership! ;D
