Seeing how I was born in 69, The Gen "X" ers,....were/are a two fold generation. There were losers back than, that grew up to be loser parents, with Gen "Y" loser children.

HOWEVER, the other fold are those who did not "fry" all their brain cells and work hard everyday, love this country, and participate in an active part in politics, community, church, and above all learning from previous generations that were frankly better than ours fightingquaker.

What happened before I was born is RELEVANT to today's political, and cultural climate. Look how fast it's all gone down hill in 40 years.

My parents were baby boomers, grandparents were/are considered the "Greatest Generation" lessons from my Grandfather, Grandmother, and my parents, made me a better person today. (hopefully). Studying history, realizing when the SHTF it reveals character.  Many today don't and will never have it.

Why do I post great historical quotes: Because they knew than what trouble this country would be in if we abandoned our previous generations values...

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873)

but I thought others would like you to know that your opinions are not shared by everyone from your generation.  (Their may be hope for us yet.)   Grin

A civil marriage (or union) is just a contract between two people, gay or straight, about rights and responsibilties. Nothing in favor of one or against the other, just two wholly different animals.

They are already trying to push triad marriages...... where does it end?

And I have to say that I have a lot of respect for Libertarians..... but here is a news flash: They are irrelevant as a political party.

Ron Paul captured the imagination of a very large number of Americans in the last election (myself included), and they where all on board until he opened his mouth about his foreign policy views. Thats when he fell flat on his face.

***Now to get back on topic........... I really think Meghan McCain is just trying to gain some street cred with conservatives here..... but my view is..... who cares ??? Since the election ended she really thinks she is relevant in politics -- or at least she is trying to become relevant. Either way, I think she is wasting her breath. No body really cares what daddy's little girl has to say. Right now all it really boils down to is that she is nothing more then a Washington Socialite.

Funny you should mention this. It lets me begin my favorite kind of campfire tale, which begins: Only in Florida.....
Our legislature, after finding time to screw CCW holders, declined, for the second straight (if thats the word) year in a row to criminalize beastiality. The senate approved it, but the house declined as it was a Democrat bill. Mind you, I don't care how close a relationship you have withe live stock. Hell, we all know that sheep lie. :P But I do love living in a state here the the prohibition against sex with goats can be made into a partisan issue. (PS Timothy, that was sarcasm ;))

Thank you!!!  We do not need more of those!!!  The only thing to come out of Washington is Corruption, if it was up to me that's where we would put our nuclear waste, its less toxic than the crap there now.

Eric
I get this, and what was meant as an off hand comment in my post is dominating what I think is the larger point. The thing is that Vietnam was a classic example of two timeless principles. The first is that the Framers had it right when they said only Congress had the power to declare war. The idea being that the people's representative's should collectively make that decision, not just one man, so it wouldn't be Johnson's war or W's war, it would be OUR war.
The second principle is that you never intervene in someone else's civil war. It's like the cops in a domestic dispute, you're always going to lose. In the case of Vietnam, it caused our very own (though much politer) civil war.
The (side) point I was trying to make is that we (the younger generation) see the Vietnam War clinically, as an historical example much like the Spanish American War. The older generation, as is obvious from these posts, still feels it viscerally. We don't. That is the sum total of the point I was trying to make. I do think the larger issue of Meghan McCain's points are instructive however.

PS Sorry for any offense in my initial post, either age wise or other wise.It is simply a sign of my impatience with folks either cynically, or sincerely dragging up old wounds for political advantage when we have pressing current and future problems on our plate. All of our current elder generation of leaders took a stand on that war, one way or another. They, and we, are stuck with that. I am a student of history, and I do understand that character counts. I also think though, that there is a lot to be said for not picking at scabs and reopenig old wounds. Vietnam is an experience we should learn from (as I have been reminded). It is not though, something that should dominate our political choices.

For being a college educated teacher you sure are ignorant, (or brainwashed).
If you bothered to do any research, IE, knew what you were talking about, you would be aware that the conflict in former French indo China was between North Vietnam, a communist country, and South Vietnam, a NON communist country. The so called Viet Cong (Northerners infiltrated after the French withdrawal) ceased to exist after the 68 tet offensive because we killed them all, after 68 the forces in the south were NVA,  in other words the propaganda that it was a "Civil war" is bullshit.
The fact that you don't see any relation between the conduct of people during the Vietnam war and their potential leadership ability (or lack of ) is just another indication that your opinions are unworthy of serious attention.

First its good to see you're being you're sweet natured self ;D (I wouldn't haven't it any other way). The fact that the viet cong were killed (part of Giaps plan as he didn't like wild cards) doesn't change the fact that it was a civil war. It would be like saying that after the last unionist in the South, or copperhead in the North was hung, that it was an international conflict. While great powers including but not limited to: the US, Japan, France, Korea, China, the USSR, Australia, etc. intervened and and agitated, it was a Vietnamese conflict. One going back to the point when Hue was the capital and it was known as Nam Viet, the Southern Kingdom, which the Chinese overlords put the Kibosh on forcing the name of Vietnam, as the south of the Kingdom. (makes no sense me either). The point is that I am well aware of the history, but a civil war that was hijacked by the Cold War, is still a civil war. This being said, partition is an acceptable resolution to a civil war, eg Ireland, Korea and hopefully Israel/Palestine. My sympathies are with the South (just kind of comes naturally ;)), but his was a Vietnamese versus Vietnamese conflict, with us and the Sovs, just egging things on.
