New Orleans again nation's murder capital
« on: June 03, 2009, 06:21:52 AM »
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans is once again the nation's murder capital after briefly losing the title.
Fresh FBI statistics show that with 64 killings per 100,000 people in 2008, New Orleans had the highest per capita murder rate in the nation, well ahead of second-place St. Louis, which had 47 murders per 100,000 people.

Baton Rouge, which gained population after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, came in No. 7 with 30 murders per 100,000.

The FBI's report bases its per capita number on a New Orleans population of 281,440 for July 1, 2008. The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center put the city's population for the first half of 2008 at 324,357. But even using the higher estimate, the city recorded 55 murders per 100,000 to still lead the nation.

Surprise, surprise.  The fruits of socialistic rights and handouts.
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

Or, maybe just lots of poor folks with no jobs. The saying idle hands are the devil's workshop is a classic for a reason. All the statistics about crime (and I've studied them professionally) tend to be fuzzy. Is it it race, access to guns, education, region, the presence or absence of the death penalty, its all more or less a wash. The one variable that is clear though, is that more jobs equals less crime. Some folks choose to be criminals, most drift into crime, step by step. Give them a decent job and that won't happen. I'm not a fan of government influenceing the economy, like bailing out wallstreet, but, if we are going to pass a stimulus package is seems that it should focus on uniting idle hands with useful work.

Sorry,

If I can't say more guns = less crime, you can't say poverty = more crime.

According to a 2007 census (compiled 2008) New Orleans isn't even in the ten lowest income counties or cities.

The lack of guns. Thats the problem!!!

Well, the Saints and the Hornets suck, so I guess the natives had to rely upon themselves to be ranked numero uno at something. Through hard work and perseverance, the thugs and gangbangers of New Orleans assured this honor was bestowed upon their lovely city.   Congratulations!   ::)

How about they go earn it?

With all of the rebuilding in NO, there is undoubtedly no shortage of jobs, although personally I do not know the NO jobs situation. Hell, even here in Fargo with layoffs at some companies, there are jobs being advertised. At some point, you need to stop being part of the cycle (or stop being lazy - crime is easier than a 9 to 5) and take a job - even if it is "beneath" you.

More guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens == less crime. John Lott studied it, found it, and it has proven true across the country.

I one hundred percent agree. I am all in favor of more guns and more jobs. Like you I am hazy about NO specifics, but one thing that did strike me is that the federal contractors doining rebuilding work rebuffed Mayor Nagins request to give a plus factor to NO residents and were hiring "legal" Mexican immigrants instead. This started under W and has continued under BO.

Criminals who use joblessness as a blanket excuse for their actions are full of crap......it's just a lame-assed excuse for plain old doing wrong.
What about the 100's of thousands of folks that are out of work that DON'T choose to break the law?
I understand, and somewhat agree, that certain living conditions can lead some types of people down a criminal path, but it's still a choice.
A criminal is a criminal whether he's employed or not.

A man that will steal a million dollars, will steal fifty cents.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
