New Orleans again nation's murder capital

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans is once again the nation's murder capital after briefly losing the title.
Fresh FBI statistics show that with 64 killings per 100,000 people in 2008, New Orleans had the highest per capita murder rate in the nation, well ahead of second-place St. Louis, which had 47 murders per 100,000 people.

Baton Rouge, which gained population after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, came in No. 7 with 30 murders per 100,000.


The FBI's report bases its per capita number on a New Orleans population of 281,440 for July 1, 2008. The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center put the city's population for the first half of 2008 at 324,357. But even using the higher estimate, the city recorded 55 murders per 100,000 to still lead the nation.

Is it it race, access to guns, education, region, the presence or absence of the death penalty, its all more or less a wash. The one variable that is clear though, is that more jobs equals less crime. Some folks choose to be criminals, most drift into crime, step by step. Give them a decent job and that won't happen. I'm not a fan of government influenceing the economy, like bailing out wallstreet, but, if we are going to pass a stimulus package is seems that it should focus on uniting idle hands with useful work.

According to a 2007 census (compiled 2008) New Orleans isn't even in the ten lowest income counties or cities.

With all of the rebuilding in NO, there is undoubtedly no shortage of jobs, although personally I do not know the NO jobs situation. Hell, even here in Fargo with layoffs at some companies, there are jobs being advertised. At some point, you need to stop being part of the cycle (or stop being lazy - crime is easier than a 9 to 5) and take a job - even if it is "beneath" you.

I one hundred percent agree. I am all in favor of more guns and more jobs. Like you I am hazy about NO specifics, but one thing that did strike me is that the federal contractors doining rebuilding work rebuffed Mayor Nagins request to give a plus factor to NO residents and were hiring "legal" Mexican immigrants instead. This started under W and has continued under BO.

What about the 100's of thousands of folks that are out of work that DON'T choose to break the law?
I understand, and somewhat agree, that certain living conditions can lead some types of people down a criminal path, but it's still a choice.
