Or, maybe just lots of poor folks with no jobs. The saying idle hands are the devil's workshop is a classic for a reason. All the statistics about crime (and I've studied them professionally) tend to be fuzzy. Is it it race, access to guns, education, region, the presence or absence of the death penalty, its all more or less a wash. The one variable that is clear though, is that more jobs equals less crime. Some folks choose to be criminals, most drift into crime, step by step. Give them a decent job and that won't happen. I'm not a fan of government influenceing the economy, like bailing out wallstreet, but, if we are going to pass a stimulus package is seems that it should focus on uniting idle hands with useful work.
