I've shot the springfield compact xd.  (Assuming that is what you are looking at)  Nice gun, but in my opinion* it is not much different than a glock sub.  One advantage over the glock is having the full size mag option with the filler grip.  Another option is something with an replaceable backstrap like a Smith and Wesson M&P or a Walther P99c or PPS.  I personally have 2 full size P99's and I love them.  They aren't for everyone but that is just me.  The Springfield is a very nice gun though.  It is a close 2nd as I do not like the M&P's that well..

I had the XD sub and was not happy with it, I had issuses with the grip. I keep a G26 because the grip is good for my meat hooks and mags come in different flavors.

If the Glock doesn't fit, it doesn't fit (though have you shot one?). My advice (not knowing your budget) is to do two things. One decide what is important to you beyond the obvious of concealability and realibity, make a list and see what fills the bill. Then travel as far as you have to one Saturday to rent a few on a range that has some reasonable candidates (Glock, Springfeild, 1911's, Sig etc.). Spend what it costs to rent and shoot them (the money should be refunded if you buy there). If even if you don't, its still money well spent before dropping five or six hundred bucks. Just my .02.

I really like my sub .40 XD!  It shoots great and is my primary def. home gun.  I think, even though it's a sub it's still aweful big and bulky for CCW.  Perhaps something thinner, in a single stack?  Anyway, I wouldn't trade my sub .40XD for anything but wouldn't use it for CCW that's just me.

Walther PPS (Police Pistol Slim) in .40 S&W comes with 2 backstraps and extended mags for bigger hands.

Very thin and very comfortable for concealed carry. German made Walther reliability.

A little ugly, but goes bang every time.

I'm about to purchase a P99 C in .40  I have found that the pps isn't enough smaller that it will make a difference to me.  Everyone is different but that is the route that I'm going
