I was in this same boat as i have medium to large hands.  I found the PPS felt terrible in my hand.  The Glock had too much forward tilt to the grip, that left me choosing between an XD and M&P both in a compact .40 variety.  I went with the M&P simply because of my love for S&W, but the XD is just as good and probably a few bucks cheaper.

But as has been mentioned before, nothing can subsitute for trigger time in firearm choosing.

I recently purchased an XD 40 Subcompact.  I too have somewhat large hands and like the feel the XD offers.  I was able to shoot the XD prior to purchase and I was impressed with its accuracy and feel.  I particularly like the trigger.  Its not crisp, but does not have that long creep some double actions have.  I had owner a Taurus PT140 and had constant problems with accuracy and trigger pull.  Not so with the XD.  I can actually hit the bull at 20 yards.  Give it a try if you can.  But the bottom line is you have to rely on it.

I have one.  I also have a Glock 19 in 9 mm that is about the same size.  I like them both but I could do without the grip safety that is on the back of the Springfield.  I can see why the old Texas Rangers made use of electrical tape for this kind of safety.  There is a trigger safety on the Springfield like the Glock.  I can't see why Springfield put it on there.

Both of mine have Crimson Trace lasers that add a little size to the grip.

I'm also a lefty and have on rare occasions been hit in the head with an ejected shell (spent cartridge) cassing frome the Springfield.

Just a couple of thoughs.

Don't forget there is both the XD  and the XD(m).   The later has backstrap options.

While I love my P99, magazines (especially .40s) are rather expensive.   About 3x what an XD or Glock mag costs.

I purchased the XD subcompact .40. At first, it felt heavier than the stated weight, but I got accustomed to it and it feels pretty good. It does feel somewhat like my G22 in a lot of ways. I did tend to be more accurate with the XD sub than the G22. The XD fit my hand good with the regular mag and just a little better with the extended mag. I'm satisfied with it.
