Anybody have any experience with H&K USP?
« on: October 08, 2007, 04:13:42 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with the H&K USP in .45? I have been looking at them on my various trips to the shops, and they have a lot of features I like, but they're pricey.
Anyone every shoot them or own one for a long time?
I got the blues as my companion.

I've owned a full size USP .45 for about 9 years now. I probably have north of 5000 rounds through it and I can't ever recall having a malfunction with it. It's also been an extremely accurate gun.

The downsides to it, it's a big gun and people with smaller hands don't care to shoot it. Magazines are about $50, so it's hard to bring yourself to stock up on them like you can with a Glock.

All in all, it's a purchase I'm glad I made (although it was about $150 - $200 cheaper back when I bought it).

HK USP full size is too big for me.  I went for the compact version which I love.  Pricey yes but worth the money.

Not much else to add.

The mags are pricey. HKs customer service is Draconian. The light rail is proprietary And the grip is pretty fat.

But I do like mine in .40 and ,45.

if you look hard, you can find them under $500 in OK shape. The HK finish is pretty tough.

The USPs are great guns.
I've had the USP full-size in 45 ACP and 9mm, the 45 Compact and the huge SOCOM 45.
My favorite was the 45 Compact as the full size was just too big and the SOCOM is a freak :-\.
My biggest issue was with the 10 round (read diminished capacity clinton mags) as I was breaking the mag bases all the time. There is something about that adrenaline in an IDPA match that makes you drive home mags hard and fast. After about the 3 magazine broke and emptied their contents out of the bottom of the mag tube, I moved on. Oh yeah the SOCOM mags did this too. Yes HK replaced them but it is still embarrassing to have a $2000 gun fail outright. In a world of Compromise some magazines did.>:(

The other thing I discovered was more about the design. The 9mm UPS just doesn't recover from recoil like my Glocks in 9mm. Yes it  is about the grip angle but it is more about the height of the bore axis. Glocks shoot well, in part, because that bore axis is so low in the hand. I think I've found the best of both worlds in a new 45, smaller grip, 10+1 steel mags (not spongy plastic) super low bore axis and near 1911 grip angle. Hint: it polymer and 45 ACP and American made and has letters like S&W and M&P on it. ;)

I agree with the comment about the magazines: Mine did not break when dropped, but the floor plates did come loose.  HK magazines are expensive; they should be more rugged.

The bore axis of the pistol is high.  If you can handle it, more power to you.

I found it to be a reliable pistol otherwise.
