Rastus, I know EXACTLY what you mean.  When I took mine apart the first time it took me two and a half days to get it back together!  I didnt want to "force" anything, and could only work at it for an hour or so at a time before wanting to use it to beat somebody to death with.  Even though the owners manual (I read it probably 12 times before following it!) tells you to "hit it with a hammer" to get it apart!  :o

My only experience is with the one MK I own.  Dont know if others do it, but when I take mine apart I usually do find debri inside.  Your guns may shoot cleaner, or you may be using cleaner ammo than me though!

It's one gun you want to make sure you shoot and clean at least every three weeks or so all year long.  Once you learn all the tricks to get it back together (wrap your head with tin foil, point the gun in the air, pull the trigger, and bark at the moon 6 times while you push on the lever and pee your pants, I think it goes), YOU DONT WANT TO LET YOURSELF FORGET!!! ;)

I'm all over the place. Self defense guns when new, I like to shoot til they puke, and let that be my guide as to when they should be cleaned, that was until I started shooting Glocks, They would'nt stop, but looked so bad, I had to clean them.

Any firearm I shoot corrosive ammo in, 7.62x39 or Milsurp .308, gets cleaned the same day and well.

Match guns, every other match, except for shotgun, maybe every 3 matches and precision guns, like my Model 41 smith, and my precision rifles, they get cleaned well after each session.

Hunting guns get cleaned at the end of season, and then sighted in again before the next hunt, and will not be cleaned until the hunt is over, unless something happens, like getting wet, or something got into the bore. Exception is the prairie dog rifle, it may get shot 250 times in a day, and at extreme ranges, so I keep the cleaning kit on the bench, and clean about every 20 shots, for accuracy, not longevity.

Pistols that I shoot lead bullets in about every 250 rounds, sometimes more depending on the bullet I'm using.

Ditto on the .17HMR, clean every time after shooting.

Being a smith, I have all the cool stuff for cleaning, I also am an automotive technician, I hate to work on my own cars, trucks, and I hate to clean my own guns. Working on them for improved performance, that is a different subject. ;)

The .22s I clean quickly. The rest, well, let's just say I had to soak the barrel of a M1A for 3 weeks in Kroil to break up whatever crap got in there and blocked the gas port. I wish I could say I learned my lesson but . . . .

Not as bad as Ol' Dirty though - 15,000 rounds and no cleaning.

Ruger Mark I, II and III's are what boresnakes were made for.........

They're what speed strips are made for too. 22/45s too. http://www.majesticarms.com/id10.html

I never thought they were that bad. I have 2 Mark II's and my grandfather's old Mark I and the only pain is the takedown and re-assembly. I always have to refer to the manual to remember which way I need to tip the gun for the latch to catch. I keep some of those rubber coated paper clips in my cleaning kit, for the takedown notch on the back of the grip. They are seriously some of the most fun guns to shoot, so they're worth it.
I'm with you Fuzdaddy. I have a stainless Mark II with the 6 7/8 inch barrel in my bug out bag. It's fun and cheap to shoot and more accurate than me. I also have to keep the manual handy for reassembly and I also have a rubber coated paper clip in my cleaning kit. Funny, same solution for breakdown. ;D I never wanted to spend the money for a takedown kit. You are right, it is worth the hassle but still a major PITA. At least it's one gun that I own where I always know where to locate the manual. ;D

Hunting rifles and shotguns, when I get a chance. That might be the end of the day or when I got back home.

AR's and handguns, I run a boresnake at the end of day, good cleaning every 200 rounds.

Did you know a  45 Caliber bore snake gets really, really stuck in a 9mm pistol?

Did you know that you can't pull it through no matter how hard you try?

Did you know it a pain in the a$% to get it out once it's stuck good and tight?

I found all this out yesterday after an IDPA match.

Hate to clean guns!!! BUT it was so ingrained in me when I was young to clean after use. My mentors taught me that you never know when you might REALLY need that weapon, and poor cleaning habits are a poor excuse for malfuntion.

So at the very least I will run a dry patch through the bore and wipe my weapon down with a silicone cloth, even if it wasn't fired.

Thanks for the heads up.  I would not have thought that.  At least you didn't try to clean it right before the match.

I'm impressed. You just quoted the directions word for word. You don't need no stinkin' manual. ;D
