I sent my Senator an Email and this is the message I received back within 30 min. It was obviously it was prepared early. Although he said he would always stand up for the 2A, I'm not going to hold my breath as he is all Democrat.
Dear Monty:
Thank you for contacting me with your opinions on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. I appreciate your advocacy on this issue.
Appointments to the Supreme Court are lifetime appointments. The decisions of the Justices can have dramatic impacts on the lives of citizens in Montana and across the country. Therefore, like you, I believe that Supreme Court nominees must, at minimum, be well-qualified, and have a record of honesty, integrity and a background free of ethical concerns.
Many Montanans are concerned that Ms. Sotomayor will not uphold the Second Amendment due to her past court opinions on gun issues. I know this is an especially important issue in states such as Montana where hunting and shooting sports are an integral part of our life. I cannot support a nominee that will make decisions infringing on our Second Amendment rights.
The Supreme Court held in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for private use. I expect the next Supreme Court Justice to honor and respect this decision, and to interpret the law in a fair and balanced manner.
I had the opportunity to meet with Ms. Sotomayor and discuss issues important to Montanans, and I will continue to study her records in preparation for the confirmation hearings. Rest assured, I am working hard to make sure the next Supreme Court Justice is appointed only after serious consideration.
I will continue to keep Montana's interests and principles in mind as I evaluate the nominee. Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch. Please don't hesitate to let me know if I can be of further assistance.
With best personal regards, I am
Senator Max Baucus
