Sotomayor Hearings Will Focus on Gun Rights
Sen. Jeff Sessions said the Second Amendment is a likely topic for the second day of hearings

Posted July 13, 2009

It may be the case, as GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham told Sonia Sotomayor on the opening day of her confirmation hearings, that her ascension to the country's highest court is a lock, baring a "meltdown" by the nominee. But that doesn't mean that the minority party won't have tough questions for President Obama's first Supreme Court pick.

Minutes after Monday's hearing wrapped up, the Senate Judiciary Committee's ranking Republican, Jeff Sessions, told reporters that the Second Amendment will be a likely focus when the hearings resume Tuesday. "No surprise attacks," the Alabama senator cautioned, adding that the judge's record left him troubled and looking for clarification about her judicial philosophy.

During his opening statement, Sessions said he believes that the country's judicial system is at a "dangerous crossroads" and called some of Sotomayor's past statements "shocking and offensive." He said that her ruling in a weapons case will come under particular scrutiny. Sandy Froman, a National Rifle Association board member and past NRA president, is on the GOP witness list for the hearings.

This year, Sotomayor concurred with a ruling in a case, Maloney v. Cuomo, brought by a New York man who said that a ban on a martial arts weapon constituted an infringement on his right to keep and bear arms. Sotomayor disagreed, noting that states have the authority to regulate weapons under federal law, despite an earlier ruling from the Supreme Court that struck down a handgun ban in the District of Columbia.

The most frequently cited case mentioned by critics of the nominee, involving firefighters from New Haven, Conn., has received much attention but is very unlikely to derail the nomination, one Republican staffer said. Less discussed issues like gun control, which resonate strongly with conservative voters in particular, could provide more traction and, if not sink the nominee, at least allow GOP inquisitors to score political points with constituents back home.

Yep, its all show trials.

She will be confirmed very easily, unless, as Senator Graham said, she "has a complete melt down" - which wont happen. I would also add that she might not get confirmed if We the People melt the phones and scare the hell out of those senators - Which also wont happen because the American people are unengaged and dont care.

BHO was very upfront with the fact that he was going to use the courts to make radical changes to our country, and Soto is a clear reiteration of that. She is a travesty to our justice system and is a prime example that justice is no longer blind.

the only news channels we have here is Communist News Network and the Chavez News Network (CNN in spanish) and the us isn't even covering anything to do with Sotomayor today. but the CNN out of Venezuela is.... WTF? it seems like the 'news networks' are more about advertising than reporting..... I'll have to look for highlights on the internet.

Sent to my Senators,

Dear Sir,

Ms Sotomayor has demonstrated by her judicial rulings (4 of 6 over turned), her membership in extremist anti-American organizations (La Raza), and her comments stating that she would rule based on her experience, that she is unqualified to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States.

Furthermore her comments that the Second Amendment is about hunting and is not a fundamental right nor worthy of incorporation displays her disdain for established law and the Bill of Rights as written.

I will be closely watching your vote and let me assure you that if you vote to confirm her appointment it will severely negatively  impact your chances for re-election.

Sincerely,

xxxxx

One thing to remember with her is that she is a socialist. All socialists lies to achieve their goals. So consider everything she says as a lie, a cover, or an evasion of the truth.

I sent my Senator an Email and this is the message I received back within 30 min. It was obviously it was prepared early. Although he said he would always stand up for the 2A, I'm not going to hold my breath as he is all Democrat.

Dear Monty:

Thank you for contacting me with your opinions on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. I appreciate your advocacy on this issue.

Appointments to the Supreme Court are lifetime appointments. The decisions of the Justices can have dramatic impacts on the lives of citizens in Montana and across the country. Therefore, like you, I believe that Supreme Court nominees must, at minimum, be well-qualified, and have a record of honesty, integrity and a background free of ethical concerns.

Many Montanans are concerned that Ms. Sotomayor will not uphold the Second Amendment due to her past court opinions on gun issues. I know this is an especially important issue in states such as Montana where hunting and shooting sports are an integral part of our life. I cannot support a nominee that will make decisions infringing on our Second Amendment rights.

The Supreme Court held in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for private use. I expect the next Supreme Court Justice to honor and respect this decision, and to interpret the law in a fair and balanced manner.

I had the opportunity to meet with Ms. Sotomayor and discuss issues important to Montanans, and I will continue to study her records in preparation for the confirmation hearings. Rest assured, I am working hard to make sure the next Supreme Court Justice is appointed only after serious consideration.

I will continue to keep Montana's interests and principles in mind as I evaluate the nominee.  Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.  Please don't hesitate to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

With best personal regards, I am

Senator Max Baucus

She really didn't say anything today( atleast for the 15 mins I watched it)  they were asking yes or no questions, and she would give them the run around and not answer the question.  granted some of the Qs were very dumb.

Liberal activist judges don;t waste time with "little things" like the law, as it is written, her own speech(s), have proven that, the only checks and balances we have left in our gov't, now that the House and Senate have Democrat majorities, is SCOTUS.

A retiring Lib for another Lib, lifetime appointment though,..
I'm glad Chief Justice Roberts is also young.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
