+10 on the Wilson mags.

I've got a few that are almost 20 years old with the original springs and they still function flawlessly.
I use the basic Wilson standard 8 rounders....nothing fancy.
They work.
I still have a few with the old-style follower that had the ball-bearing in it (I don't know if they make them anymore).

I have a couple of McCormick 10 round extended mags and they have never worked well. I can't load more than 7 or 8 rounds in it and have it function.

Never had problems with factory Colt mags .......I just like the stainless Wilson's better.

Thanks for all the input and for sharing your knowledge and experiences.  I bought both of the guns used and don't know if they have been modified in any way.  The government model I think had 1 shooting star mag with it and the commander was a retired officers duty wepeon.  I got his complete duty rig with it which included 7 magazines.  They are not marked in any way and are made of SS.

The retired LEO said he thought they were Colt.  He thought that the commander also had a Clark trigger in it but couldn't remember.  He hadn't shot it much since soon after he got it and qualified with it he had a heart attack and was off work for quite awhile.  He then came back to work for a short time then retired under disability.  I have only shot them a couple of times some time ago and was using the SS mags.  I was having problems with both of them and don't remember exactly what the problems were other than I couldn't get more than a couple of shots without a problem.  I need to get them out of storage and do a thorough run through with them to see what problems there may be.   The problem may also be me as I'm not sure that my grip and form was proper and was told that may contribute to the problem.

I think I did get a couple new shooting star mags for them back when so I'll try those and see if I can also find a couple of different kinds of ammo also.  I will also soon have a Novak magazine to try as i have a used RIA in layaway with a Novak magazine.  I really didn't need the RIA, but it was cheap and I could pay on it as I was able to.

just kind of a FYI, not all colt mags are equal.

it should also be noted that there are lots of FAKE colt mags running around.

I will also soon have a Novak magazine to try as i have a used RIA in layaway with a Novak magazine.

Just so you are aware, Novak magazines are made by ACT of Italy...Novak just affixes his name to them.  These same identical ACT magazines used to come standard with Nighthawk Custom 1911s, in fact mine came with two.  About a year ago Nighthawk discontinued their use and moved to a different manufacturer as they were having to constantly replace them under their lifetime warranty for split or cracking lips.  They had unending complaints about the magazines from customers who just spent upwards of $3,000 for a 1911 and were not happy.   The guns were and are superb, but they were being overshadowed by all the magazine issues. The only FTEs I have ever had with my Nighthawk occurred with the ACT mags that came with the gun.  Switching to Wilson ETMs and Check-Mate magazines (both stainless steel) solved the problem immediately (both manufacturer's magazines have performed flawlessly).  I have not had an FTE or FTF since I made the switch over a year ago.

Regardless of the quality of your gun, your weakest link is generally the magazine.  Do yourself a favor and carefully track and mark the magazine that fails on you, even if it fails only once.  Then take it apart, clean it and lightly oil the spring.  If it happens again...toss it in the trash and continue tracking the remaining magazines until you have only completely reliable magazines in your possession......Just my humble opinion FWIW.

When I had a Colt Gov't Model I used factory mags and it worked great.

As a side note, most SS mags are actually nickel plated. That's a good thing because they're smoother than unplated.

Cobra Mags from Tripp Research.

There was a lot of buzz a few years ago when these came out, but not much since.  Can you do a review of them?

I'm using Chip McCormack 10 rd mags in my Colt and Les Baer 45's. Never had any problems.
