I had a buddy who was an Alaskan bush pilot (Crazy) and outfitter. His brother surprized a grizzly outside of their cabin. He shot the grizzly in the head with a .357 Magnum. The .357 round BOUNCED off the bears head. Scott came out and dispatched the grizzly with a rifle.

I always thought that maybe ol' Scott was stretchin' this story, but if a pistol round can bounce off of the head of a 2 y/o 120 pound bear.....................Just saying. I'd want a large bore rifle real handy in grizzly country.

A bear head is fairly flat so the pistol bullet probably skidded off like firing at a low angle at a steel plate.

If you live in bear country,,,,,what ever happened to the old RIFLE on the mantle?

Cougar's, bears, lions,, tigers,...Oh My,...at least 12g with slugs, or buck n ball,....

The LEO's should carry the 870 in bear country, the trained ones with an AR-10 in .308...

It's bear country!!!

and it's called a rifle,,.....although anything is better than nothing...

The Mosquito will at least piss it off long enough t get to a larger weapon....

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

I've always heard a pump shot gun with slugs is the best tool for the job.

I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

If I ever end up in bear country carrying nothing bigger than a handgun it'll be a .44 Mag with hard cast solids like the ones I got from Cor-Bon.

We've had several black bear sightings recently near Kent State University (near Akron, Ohio) and surrounding area.  The advise the Dept. of Wildlife gives is "Bears don't have very good eyesight so they don't know what it is they have stumbled across...sooooo make a lot of noise to scare it off!"  Not me.....especially if she has cubs!  She'll never catch me cuz I ain't runnin in the same stuff she is!

Many years ago a bear and I surprised each other, from about 30 feet, in camp at the back of the mess hall.  I screamed and ran and so did the bear.  I'm not sure which of us ran faster as we ran in opposit directions.  The cook had an apartment in the mess hall and thought the bear had gotten me from all the commotion.  I didn't have to change my underware, but the door and lock of the cabin did need some repair.
