A question to ask, in a non-confrontational way would be, "What are the security measures and protocols in place, here should there be a fear for my safety, or safety of my co-workers?
What can I do do reasonably be assured that this company will protect and secure the integrity of a "safe" working environment?
Am I allowed to defend my self from a life threatening situation as I see fit? And if not Why? And what will you do to assure my safety?
