Today at work. A rant.
« on: August 05, 2009, 06:33:59 PM »
Today at my work we had a mandatory meeting about Violence in the Workplace.
Not a bad meeting, nothing new to discuss. Clearly written by a Liberal HR rep, heck my company is privately owned by a prominent NY family that likes to donate money to the local colleges.

“The most common reason for death at work for women and 2nd for men is murder” now if that is not a propaganda statement I don’t know what is.

My gripe is this. I asked “what is a reasonable persons’ limit on being vigilant to warning signs of behavior as to being obsessed?” That went over like a lead balloon. The answer was pure PC in that that is a decision best made by the individual. The examples of violent behavior were, name calling, violating personal space, getting someone to do what you want via pressure. Heck my management does that on a daily basis.

Now for my objection. Quote, “the 2008 FL gun law”, states that person(s) with a CCW can have a firearm in there personal car regardless of company policy, is a precursor of increased violence. What happy horse crap is that? I had to bite my tongue as not to ask for a single example to back up the speakers’ opinion.

I am responsible for my own wellbeing, so the law was created not to protect me but to give my work an “out” so they could not be held responsible for me, including after hours but still on the premises (aka walking to my car). “Oh, but with this LAW an employee might get angry after a bad review and go and get there gun” again, I ask for an example of this, none exist.

I wanted to shout “Guns cause crime like cars cause car accidents” but I would be labeled as a gun loving wacko for sure. In fact I use that same phrase whenever anyone comments on why I am on crutches.

Workplace violence is real, it’s scary and therefore I should not, can not, depend on my work or anyone else but me to defend me. Next person to the soap box please.

Hey Steyr, sorry to read about your HR's concerns about violence in the work place, which is a valid topic, turn into a slanted talking points get together.

A question to ask, in a non-confrontational way would be, "What are the security measures and protocols in place, here should there be a fear for my safety, or safety of my co-workers?

What can I do do reasonably be assured that this company will protect and secure the integrity of a "safe" working environment?

Am I allowed to defend my self from a life threatening situation as I see fit? And if not Why? And what will you do to assure my safety?

After the stutters and blanket "we'll call 911" response, the writing will be on the wall. I know,...I've asked these questions...

As a Florida resident, myself, I can carry to work but must leave it in my vehicle, that helps me not in the bldg...

We are responsible for our safety, OC spray, Kershaw pocketknife, taser, are options,...

Tough call and good topic.

Most companies have such HR nonsense. It started as a "good idea" and "workplace safety", and now the libs are pursuing it even more aggressively.

Very definitely bring up the fact that the company refusing to allow carrying on premises means that the company is assuming sole responsibility for all workers anywhere on company premises - and then watch their response.

My former company (being based in kalifornia) has a policy against weapons in the workplace. I always wondered what would happen since ND has no opt out language for businesses, if someone wanted to make a case under the state's constitution which is very clear on gun ownership and possession. I decided not to be the guinea pig.

Screw company policy. Until BO got in I could get another job, but not another life. You have to be alive to get fired.
What they DIDN'T mention, is that  the #1 cause of death in the workplace is COMPANY NEGLIGENCE, either poor maintenance or poor training.

On the local news the other night they reported a local company has instituted a policy of no smoking or possesion of cigs or tobaco products even in your car in the parking area. They can ban smoking, but to tell you what you can have in youur car is bull.

Thanks for the reply's so far. I guess I need to take my baton with me.
And in talking with my other employees I used the slogan, I carry a gun because a cop is to heavy.
Case in point, the woman stabbed by her teenage son with a butter knife. My coworker was commenting on how long it was taking 911 to route her call and get an officer to respond.

Good topic. Congrats on holdng your tongue and holding your job. The company sounds like the type of organization that would can an employee for daring to challange their drivel with logic or facts.

Your words are sage wisdom, count only upon yourself to defend yourself. I would agree with carrying a good knife, pepper spray, stun-gun, etc......

Hang in there.

I had a hard time holding my tongue while I was reading your post Steyr..
God I hate liberal double talking BS ..and the ones using it in the work place are so all mighty smug and condescending about it..as they are "explaining what you can and can not do.."..

THAT alone and their attitude makes me just go over the line. The idiots think that they are all that because in that situation they have the upper hand..

Congratulations on keeping your lips tight together..  I don't imagine I coulda or woulda.. but I probably shoulda..  ;D
