not really, nearly every enlisted's primary weapon is his rifle.

now cops see their primary weapon as their pistol.

you see my logic  ;D

Generally they have a worse record than CCW's, I know that statistically civilians fire fewer shots to achieve the same results .
I also know that whenever I've been shooting when the local cops and SD have been I've gotten tighter groups at longer range on smaller targets. And to forestall one comment, I don't get to practice that much, for example, the only time I have been to the range this YEAR, has been to drop off a job application, so it isn't because I have more practice.

Most cops can't shoot for crap (yes, there are exceptions, and no, I am not bashing cops) and have very poor gun handling skills. That's my logic.  ;)

I have always said, If I am being held hostage, don't send the cops in to get me, just toss a gun in the window and I'll take care of it myself. Less chance of getting hurt that way.  ;D

90% of them couldn't hit their ass with both hands and would stand a very good chance of blowing a cheek off if they tried.
Thats why those NYC cops fired 40 some odd rounds at a guy in a hallway and only hit him 3 - 5 times, and only ONE of those was a solid hit, There was a case in Ca. in the 90's Several cops woke up a woman sleeping in her car, she reached for something they emptied their pistols, she was not hurt.
Yeah, Cops are GREAT with pistols, Very few of them are Jim Cirrilo, or Mossad Ayoob.

Cops and poor pistol skills is something I've never understood. I know its real. I've seen it, I've read about it, I just don't get it. I mean not knowing how to shoot isn't just not knowing how to do your job, its not knowing how to stay alive. Maybe I'm strange, but when I worked at an outfitters, I studied all the catalogs from North Face and Patagonia etc so I could tell my customers the details of what we were selling. When I was a courier I spent some QT with a street map of DC looking for shortcuts that would save me time and money and as a teacher I spend 4 hours in the library searching for every hour I spend lecturing on a new class. Why? To do my job right. If I were a cop, where the consequenses of a bad shot or a slow draw was your life or that of an innocent you were supposed to protect I would be at the range at least once a week. That's not internet tough guy stuff either, its just how I view my work, I take it seriously and do my job. The worst I've had to worry about is getting fired, not getting shot. I do not get cops who are not religious about pistol practice.

It's really quite simple FQ, the vast majority of Cops go through their entire career and never draw their weapon any where but the range.

i guess. great tax money huh?

well in my experience with cops that have actually wanted to be a contractor, they have very high standards of pistol shooting. They cant shoot a AR 15 for their balls though.

The woman in the car was shot 12 times and died. Local news really were out to hang these cops. She was "asleep" in her car with a gun in her lap. The cops said that when they tried to wake her that she reached for the gun. We'll never hear her side. The cops were fired. Maybe they were right maybe not. She was black and the cops were white, so it became a Jesse Jackson issue and he's always out to lynch anyone that he says wrongs a black person. I don't know if we ever got the truth. The majority of the cops I know here in California have fellow officers on the force that are of all different races and they constantly trust their backs to one another, so I don't buy that race was an issue. It's sad that a 19 year old girl's life was ended, but she may have been mostly responsible for those consequences.

I shoot with some cops that are great shots and others that are just OK. I compete with a couple of academy cadets that can beat anyone - a product of video game enhanced hand-eye coordination. Some cops shoot. Some don't. Just like the rest of the population, there are some that are into guns and some that aren't.
