Same with the M 151, in fact it may be the same engine.

The Mutt:

Seem's like a pretty good choice

The scout:  my neighbor just sold an '81 for $500 on ebay with a new top, 3 speed manual, NO rust, 4cyl engine had a bad knock.  I was looking hard at it until he told me it got 16mpg on a good day (before he spun a bearing in it).

Gas or diesel I think you need to be looking for better than 20mpg, and enough interior room to at least store some supplies in.

My old rag top Sami..  Had 27" wheel travel at all four corners (notice shackels).  Sold it about 6 months ago.

I'd lean toward a hard top more now.  :-\  Dark tint the rear windows for at least SOME security.

I wonder about 2wd being the better choice though.  More "low profile" - draw less attention, faster - get away, better mileage!

They make GM HEI conversions for about everything in the world (including VW aircooled beetles!).  The HEI only has a TEENY little control module that'd be easy to wrap in foil, put in a metal box, and have protected as a spare.

I put a one wire Mallory HEI in my 76 jeep cherokee I just sold.  It worked sweet, installed in about 15 minutes.

I've had wranglers with both the 4.2 liter, and the 4.0 liter.  Manual tranny and auto, only 15-16mpg with stock tires!

I see someone already posted a Suzuki Samurai. It would meet a few of the criteria that Badger posted. I had one in the 80's. It was great on snowboarding trips and even in water near over the hood (I actually delivered pizza in that condition). It definitely wouldn't be high on the fast list. Passing a semi on the highway was even pretty tough.

I understand that for long term Diesel stores longer than Gas.

I understand that for long term Diesel stores longer than Gas.

I believe the only mid range (6 months to two years) storage issue would be algae growth, but there is a simple additive for that.  And it is easier to take care of that than the break down of gas, even with additives like sta bil.  I know that we used to store up to 1,000 gallons of diesel for over six months with no issue, and we would put the combines away with two hundred gallons in their tanks for ten months with no additives and no issues.  Damn ... I can't let my lawn mower, snow blower, string trimmer, etc. sit for six months without half the gas going bad.

Plus I would guess there would be less demand for diesel by the remaining public at large.

You can't go wrong with one of these.

Easy to work on, low tech, go anywhere, good mileage.

Been there, done that...........
