Here's To The USS New York LPD-21 God Bless Her!

Thought that out of tragedy comes triumph, and the USS New York, built with 7.5 tons of World Trade Center Steel, has been Commissioned.

http://www.ussnewyork.com/ussny_about.html

For the Gear-heads, like me,

Propulsion
The USS New York uses
Four Colt-Pielstick PC2.5 STC Turbocharged Marine Diesel Engines with Inboard Rotating Rolls-Royce Controllable Pitch Propellers. The 16-cylinder Colt-Pielstick PC2.5 STC engine is intended for use on ships requiring high propulsion power combined with a lightweight installation. The engine was selected to power all the San Antonio Class vessels. Four engines are installed per ship, two per reduction gear, with each shaft driving controllable pitch propellers. Each engine is rated at 7755 kW at 520 rpm.

The USS New York sports an overall length of 684 feet and a 661-foot length at the waterline. She has a 105 overall beam measure and a 97-foot beam measure at the waterline. Her draught is listed at 23 feet. Power is supplied by 4 x sequentially-turbocharged marine Cold-Pielstick diesel engines delivering 41,600 shaft horsepower to two shafts. This arrangement will allow for a top listed speed of 22 knots.

(She'll go faster, but the Navy doesn't advertise) 8)

Plus she's designed to carry an ass kickin bunch of Marines. Guns, Rockets, and other stuff that's still "classified".... ::)

An Old Ship's Prayer:

O Eternal Father, we pray for all who sail in this ship. Unite us in the spirit of service and friendship and strengthen us that we may faithfully perform our duty. We ask Thy blessing on those we love and pray that we have lasting peace through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A part of what happened on 9/11 has been made into this ship. Fair winds and following seas USS New York.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

Great point alf, but Hillary was there, at least knows how to act like a President, and she has more b***s and experience than BHO anyway.

No disrespect to the post or the ship. But how is it that steel that has been damaged so badly by heat is used again on a ship. I thought the heat was soooo bad it took away the integrity of the steel and thats why the building fell ? I'm no metallurgist but in most cases that means that steel cannot be used again for any load bearing project. And 7.5 tons of bad steel. sounds like a government project.  It smells .

It was melted down and recast as new steel. Here is a web site with pictures and info on the process. Some really good pictures too.

The steel on the lower floors and foundation suffered no heat damage, just the collapse of the upper floors on top.

The idea for using steel from the WTC as part of the ship's frame could not be attributed to any one individual or organization. However, New York Gov. George Pataki worked to acquire the steel and deliver it to the Amite Foundry and Machine, Inc., Amite, La., as a gift from the citizens of New York to the Navy. The steel was treated and smelted for use as the ship’s bow stem (Unit 1120) during construction.

The bow stem is the foremost portion of the ship where it cuts through the water and offers hull integrity.

"The significance of where the WTC steel is located on the 684-foot-long ship symbolizes the strength and resiliency of the citizens of New York as it sails forward around the world," said Cmdr. Quentin King, Navy program manager representative on site. "It sends a message of America becoming stronger as a result, coming together as a country and ready to move forward as we make our way through the world."
