Surprise to find that Channel Loc and some Craftsman are still made in USA. After looking at what pliers were available I’ll just stick with the Leatherman tool.  I did remove the belt clip to make it more compact.

Handguns / GLOCK Gen 6
« Last post by alfsauve on December 11, 2025, 11:39:30 AM »
I don't know if we've covered this.  Forgive me.

For Reference, I have a G17 Gen5 that I only use to shoot GSSF matches.

Was at the LGS early yesterday few people were there, the gunsmiths were testing out a full auto and in the bay next to mine was the Glock rep, bringing all the store employee up-to-date on the new Gen 6.  I stuck my nose in and asked if I could shoot the G17.   If you didn't know the Gen 6 has:

A flat faced trigger design
redesigned optic mount more compatible with the industry.
palm swell
extended thumb rest
enlarged beavertail
new grip texture
slide serrations angled deeper into the slide

Yes I do like the trigger.  Dry fired it very slowly several times.  Acceptable creep.   Reset was positive and not to long. The gun felt good.  Understand I go back and forth between a Ruger 22/45, L/N frame revolvers, Sig P320, FN509 and others so the palm swell and grip angle aren't a biggie to me.  The tang and texture are not of a concern.  They did feel good.  And one can always use a better grip on the slide.  Just shoot in the rain and you'll see.  I've learned to adapt.  For others it's critical.  The gun felt good.  He had a 7yd target and I put the 10 rounds all in one hole for him.  I didn't shoot too slowly after the first couple, either.  I think he was going to save that target for bragging on the gun.  I didn't pay attention to the iron sights since he had a red-dot on it and I don't care because I'd replace them anyway with LPAs.

I'm not going to run out and buy one.  If on the off chance I win a gun at GSSF, I'll will up grade my Gen 5, but then by the time I do that they may have a Gen7 out.

Reloading / Frangible Ammo
« Last post by alfsauve on December 11, 2025, 10:16:27 AM »
Never paid much attention to Frangible ammo.  But my Steel Challenge practice group has recently caught on to it.  Much less splatter.  Distinctive sound when it hits.  PLUS we can get it for 6 cents a round!!!

We're all reloading 9mm Norma 95gr frangible .355" diameter bullets from Raven Rock Precision.

https://ravenrocksprecision.com/featured/9mm/frangible/

My concern was the smaller diameter, .355" as I usually shoot .356" in both my semi-autos, my PCC and my revolver.

Let's get this out there for those who don't know.  9mm, .38spl & and .357Mag all have the exact same SAAMI barrel specifications.   .355" grove, .346" bore.  .357" bullets are left over from the era of black powder and soft lead projectiles.

Interestingly enough, the rule of thumb (research it yourself don't take my word for it)  is the loads for this round, especially with TiteGroup, are close to the ones for shooting plated 147gr bullets.  And that's what I found.  In Steel Challenge the priorities are reliable functioning and reasonable accuracy.  What my friends and I have found is that 3.0gr of TG function blowback PCCs quite well, however 3.1 or 3.2 is needed for reliable functioning of lock-breech guns.  And of course in my revolver it's a non-issue.

They produce slightly lower recoil, we perceive, and have a distinctive sound when they hit and leave a brown mark on the targets with of course almost no splatter.
I used the same setting on the seating die which means they are seated to the same depth inside the case as my 147gr plated bullets.  But with the flat nose it works out to 1.06" COAL.  Do have to be careful with the crimp as they are brittle and can shatter.  So far no problem.  Haven't done a chrono on them yet.

Did I mention they are only 6 cents each.  And now with CCI primers are under 6 cents means you can reload for close to 14 cents a round.  Slightly more with Federal.

That's great.  What do you think happened to cause that feed issue?  Cold weather gumming up the works?

Could be the cold.  it's never done it before and I gave it a good cleaning.   I'll re-clean it before the next match.  At my next practice I'll go through every magazine and mark which ones it happens on, if it happens.

I only use CCI plated standard velocity so should be minimum of wax/lube to gum anything up.

In the bag on the left are cleaning patches and some pipe cleaners.  I keep several red pipe cleaners hanging on my range cart for a) check for block barrel b) as an emergency ECI in case somebody forgot theirs.  Also, for no good reason I keep a couple of zip ties in the tool box.

I was wondering about the Leatherman tool.  The only thing I need it for is the pliers.  I'll look for USA made long nose pliers.  For field repairs I don't need large pliers.  I have those in the truck tool box.

Good info guys.

I keep this for screws, etc.: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1026653778?pid=566001

Somtimes this punch set:  https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1018248140?pid=258460

One of these if there is AR work to do:  https://www.midwayusa.com/product/102305607?pid=502227

Some assorted allen wrenches...mostly from scope mount kits.  And that's about it.  I like the wrenches idea.  Cleaning rods...I never have kept them around but with 22's that's a great idea.  I do keep some silicone cleaning cloths around along with various gun oils.

And, oh yeah, since Frank mentioned them I have received some pipe cleaners that were ordered.  I'm going to drop a couple of those in the shooting bag.
