The television show "Mythbusters" did a good episode recently on the whole drunk driving / cell phone talking thing. Their findings were interesting. The tests were done under the supervision of the California Highway Patrol on a closed course. First, the 2 participants consumed enough alcohol until they blew just over the legal limit on a police provided, certified, Breathalyzer. They then drove the course set up by "Mythbusters", and the police. The police recorded their "scores".
The next day after all of the affects of the alcohol wore off, they drove the exact same course while talking on a cell phone and were being asked simple questions on the phone. Both of the testers did FAR WORSE when talking on the phone as opposed to driving under the influence above the "legal" limit!
I'm not using this in support of driving after drinking, but to show how foolish our laws have become. And now, to make matters even worse, we have people driving while TEXTING! Very few states have laws preventing this. The reason is once again the almighty buck. Cell phone providers lobby heavily and constantly to prevent these kind of laws from being past. It should be a "gimme". More idiotic laws from the state of Arizona. Here it is perfectly legal to drive on the freeway, or anywhere else, with people riding in the back of a open pickup truck bed. But if the driver in the pickup isn't wearing his or her seat belt, they will receive a ticket! Many times while driving to and from work I'll see pickup trucks owned and operated by landscape companies driving 65+ MPH down the freeway with half a dozen Mexicans riding in the back. If that truck had to lock up his brakes and slid sideways, there would be bodies all over the road. All perfectly legal mind you. Yet we worry, and live or die by .01 on the Breathalyzer. Complete nonsense. Bill T.
