I Renewed My Carry Permit Today
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:24:39 AM »
While chatting with the secretary at my County's Sheriff's Office, I asked what could be done to get a permit renewed if one worked during the hours the front desk was open (8-5 M-F).  Her response floored me.  She said, "Like a driver's license, this is a privilege, so you have to abide by our hours."  Before I could think, I replied, "No, actually it's a Constitutional right, and it's NOTHING like a driver's license.  If it were like a driver's license it would be honored everywhere."  She gave me the evil eye and said nothing.  I did not go any further, either, since she had yet to hand me my new permit.

It just floored me.  2A rights are now a privilege?  Where the hell am I?

:o

Good answer!

I know resisting the urge to slap the crap outta her was overwhelming, you did good......great come-back. Some people just don't get it.

I renewed mine (4th renewal, 20th year) back in September '09, and it took less than an hour total. And that was only because there were a few extra forms for the court and the sheriff, and I had to be electronically fingerprinted (had to go down to city hall, a few blocks away). It was the first time I've had to be re-fingerprinted since my first permit at age 21.

She is guilty of using an incorrect analogy and it appears that TT made his point.  I don't think she deserves to get beat up over it.  The reall issue appears to be the hours of operation and I doubt that she controls the hours applications are accepted.  If you want the hours changed you need to involve Sheriff and County commissioners.

TT made a good point, but I'd put money on it she just shrugged it off and forgot about it.

The whole point is the lackadaisical mentality and attitude put forth by those who are in a position where they should know better. That's what is wrong with the whole country these days.....too many people do not understand the difference between a right and a privilege.

I'll assume she was referring to the CCW as a "privilege" in your state.

Is Iowa a shall issue or may issue state?

Our local county clourthouse works late one day a week and Saturdays for those of us who find it tough to get out work during the work day.

Benjamin Franklin has been credited with this quote, "Men are most convinced by things they, themselves, discover."

Telling someone what to beleive seldom works.  If you don't beleive me, tonight, tell the person closest to you the 10 things they need to change.  Then share the results with us - I doubt you make it through the whole list.  If the people we love won't accept this from us imagine what happens if we do this to people we don't know.

Yes, agreed........and that disproves my previous statement how?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you seem argumentative to the point that people who should know better are too lazy to care about finding out different.
