I was always taught ... Ok, during my two years of Technical Writing I was taught that jargon was a group of words that have a specific meaning within a given industry, and jargon should never be used outside of the closed setting where it was developed. However, many people believe that the use of jargon will make them appear smarter and "in the know."
My experience has shown that the two largest users of jargon in everyday conversation are nurses, who want to appear as "good" as doctors," and the media ... no comments necessary I believe. Ok, add a third - Computer geeks
