Well I took the 1911 into Ace Sporting goods tonight on my way to Columbus. I was thinking they could send it back to Springfield Armory for me. The guy I spoke to had their gunsmith take a look at it. It turns out there was a broken part on the pistol. See if you can find what's missing in the photo below:

The end of the part that holds the slide stop in place (sorry I don't know the proper name for it) was broken off.
He replaced the part and shot a couple mags of ammo through it without a hiccup. I was in and out in 20 minutes! I'm really liking this place. Will let you know after I get to a range if that fixed it.
P.S. That reminded me of the time I was at a range that had a Glock 19 rental gun with a broken slide stop. The slide locked open after every round fired. But Glocks never break! They're perfect.
