I've never had either, but I do have a Mossberg 590, and It's an excellent gun. My dad has a Winchester 1300 Defender, and it's an excellent gun. The 1300 has a smoother action than the Mossbergs and Remingtons, or at least the ones I've handled.

DARN! I gotta come down on the side of...BOTH of them!

I tend to be an 870 Guy because that's what I started shooting as a kid. My main security shotgun is an 870 Vang Comp. OTOH, I'vs shot a bunch of Mossbergs, and they are rocks. I like a poll in which you can't lose!

In either case, I cannot recommend HANS VANG enough...the Vang Comp system is every bit as good as you've heard, and we've done side by side comparisons of patterns!

Michael is right ... both are great shotguns.  I just sold my Remington 870P to a friend and will be in the market shortly for another 12ga to compliment my old Winchester M12.  I am leaning towards the Mossberg 590 or Mossberg 930SPX.

IF you like taking 12ga guns to the extreme, check out Michael's posts on his new Serbu Super Shorty.

It wasn't one of the choices, but I picked up a JC Higgins (Sears) Model 60 at a garage sale for $45. No, that price ain't missing any digits.

Gotta do a little gunsmithing with it, but it has this cool adjustable choke ("Poly Choke") on the front that looks like a combo compensator and breaching tool. I'll post once I get it cleaned up and repaired.

Bullseye!

Just another Chevy vs Ford debate.... They are both great guns, and you cant go wrong with either choice.

Yes Michael, I want to win a tactical 12 ga.!

I have both, a lefty 870 and Mossy 500. The Mossberg usually gets the nod for road warrior work just because it's chea less expensive and I hate beating up my purty 870.
If I had to choose which one to grab in a pinch, there isn't enough difference between the two - both are great shotguns.
If you are not limited by funds, get an 11-87 or 1100 or another brand gas gun of your choice - they shoot much softer.

I've used both, and both are great.  There are many after-market attachments for both, including lights, pistol grip stocks, folding stocks, heat shields, ghost right sights, magazine extenders, etc.  I used 870's as a cop, and own a Mossberg 500.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvQJsYnkNhA&feature=related . I hate when this happens.

Sorry, wrong video posted due to a gremlin in my system.

Although, I still love my 870.
