Synthetic #9 --- no-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
« on: June 12, 2015, 08:29:04 AM »

I'm a native Georgian.   I grew up on Coke and peanuts.  I lived through the New Coke fiasco 30 years ago.  (I was actually part of the "roll out" event in downtown ATL.)    As CC discovered, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.  Some things you just don't need to be a changin'.

Now this.

My bench is down to two very basic things.   Hoppe's #9 and AT Fluid.   Now they've gone and messed with #9.    Only saving grace is they still make the "regular" formula.  I might have to get some to see me through the rest of my life.   Considering how infrequently I clean my guns, and how few years I have left in this world, 1 or 2 quarts should do it.

It's OK if ,as with motor oil, it's an option.
If it's a replacement we should think about burning down the plant ! ;D

(PS, I said THINK about it, not DO it. )

If they ruin Hoppe's #9, what will I use for after shave?  My wife will divorce me!  I know I'm not the only one.  It is so common that even Nathan Jorgenson wrote about it in his book Waiting On White Horses.  Every woman I know who has read this book laughed because they recognized their hunting husband in it.

Don't mess with my love life!

Didn't the old formula cause problems if you let it soak into a nickel plated gun? It actually may be an improvement and it still has that same great smell. I'm willing to give it a try when I need more Hoppe's.

Doesn't look like a replacement.  Just a new gimmick maybe?  I can't imagine they'd be that stupid to get rid of the classic no 9.

As far as I'm concerned, they ruined Hoppes #9 years ago when they took the Benzene out of it. That is what gave it that famous nice smell. Todays Hoppes #9 DOES NOT smell the same. Always remember, if they change something in order to make it "better" for the environment, it's never worth a $h!t afterward. The "New" Hoppes #9 is one on a long list of many.

Yes, BillT is right. one of the greatest benefits to the 3rd world in the 20th century was getting control of malaria.
Then they banned the DDT that made it possible.

I remember when I was an apprentice back in the 70's, there was a tapping fluid called Tap Magic. It was a very thin cutting fluid that worked better than any tapping fluid on the market. Our company bought it by the case. It also came in a version that was for Aluminum only. It worked equally as well. Taps lasted far longer, and we broke very few of them. Both tapping manually, as well as in tapping in the machines with tapping heads.

Then in the 90's someone at the EPA decided they had to change the formula because of the environment. I'm not sure, but I think it contained Fluorocarbons which were supposedly destroying the Ozone layer. Anyway the new stuff wasn't, (isn't) worth crap. It doesn't work nearly as well. So much so we stopped using it. The EPA has destroyed the effectiveness of so many good products it's ridiculous. One way or the other we pay the price for all of this. Just look at the amount of Termite damage in homes and businesses since they banned Chlordane.
