I didn't know it ever had benzene in it but they quit using it because it causes cancer among other problems. From Wikipedia - Benzene increases the risk of cancer and other illnesses. Benzene is a notorious cause of bone marrow failure. Substantial quantities of epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory data link benzene to aplastic anemia, acute leukemia, and bone marrow abnormalities.[52][53] The specific hematologic malignancies that benzene is associated with include: acute myeloid leukemia (AML), aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).[54]

The American Petroleum Institute (API) stated in 1948 that "it is generally considered that the only absolutely safe concentration for benzene is zero."[55] The US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) classifies benzene as a human carcinogen. Long-term exposure to excessive levels of benzene in the air causes leukemia, a potentially fatal cancer of the blood-forming organs. In particular, Acute myeloid leukemia or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (AML & ANLL) is not disputed to be caused by benzene.[56] IARC rated benzene as "known to be carcinogenic to humans" (Group 1).

Because benzene is ubiquitous in gasoline and hydrocarbon fuels are in use everywhere, human exposure to benzene is a global health problem. Benzene targets liver, kidney, lung, heart and the brain and can cause DNA strand breaks, chromosomal damage, etc. Benzene causes cancer in animals including humans. Benzene has been shown to cause cancer in both sexes of multiple species of laboratory animals exposed via various routes.[57][58]

Some women who inhaled high levels of benzene for many months had irregular menstrual periods and a decrease in the size of their ovaries. Benzene exposure has been linked directly to the neural birth defects spina bifida and anencephaly.[59] Men exposed to high levels of benzene are more likely to have an abnormal amount of chromosomes in their sperm, which impacts fertility and fetal development.[60]

I never had any problems with Tap Magic in the 2000's, maybe they fixed it or application made a difference.
I remember my Dad bitching about them banning Chlordane, I remember the white powder spread around the foundation. Paragoric, Mercurochrome, Methiolate, and Iodine are some others that worked but got banned.
Remember "Fisherman's salve, the stick that you melted some off onto a band ade ?

Switched to this years ago, never looked back.  Works better than No. 9 ever did, and is much better than the current stuff.  Cheap too.

Just mix:

1 part ATF
1 part kerosene
1 part mineral spirits

If you are going to clean shotguns, one part acetone cuts the fowling left by plastic wads - but you then have to store the mix in a plastic container.

I've seen acetone based nail polish remover in plastic bottles. It doesn't eat it's way through.

I think models are made of styrene. If they are it must be like putting gasoline in a styrofoam cup. It melts into a mess stickier than napalm.

You can still buy iodine--just not ANYTHING with mercury in it.  Used to get .02% mercuric oxide ophthalmic ointment that was great for treating sties and even pink-eye. Not any more.  Gotta protect from anything that works.

I ran across a comment a while back that there was no longer ANY commercial use for Mercury.
